Travel guide to Lambaré: a day from the old centre to the riverfront and the hill

A one-day plan for Lambaré: historic centre, lunch, an afternoon at the park or bowling, and sunset on the Costanera Sur.

In this guide
  1. Morning: the historic centre
  2. Midday: eating on Avenida Cacique Lambaré
  3. Afternoon: park, bowling or beach
  4. Sunset: Costanera Sur and Cerro Lambaré
  5. Getting there and around

Lambaré, right on Asunción's southern edge, works best as a well-ordered day: the historic centre on Avenida Cacique Lambaré in the morning, lunch on the same avenue, a park or bowling in the afternoon, and the Costanera Sur riverfront up to Cerro Lambaré at sunset. That way you dodge the worst heat and end by the river when the light is best.

Morning: the historic centre

Start early, while it is still comfortable to walk. Everything is a few blocks apart:

  • Parroquia Nuestra Señora del Rosario. The town's main and oldest church; its current façade dates from 22 March 1846, under Carlos Antonio López (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). It faces the Plaza Central on Avenida Cacique Lambaré.
  • Casa de la Cultura Profesor Héctor Portillo. An old mansion turned museum, behind the town hall (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)).
  • Monumento a la Burrerita. On the same avenue; Francisco Javier Báez Rolón's statue honours the women who carried goods by donkey since colonial times (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). It is Lambaré's classic photo.
  • Casa de Retiros Nuestra Señora de Betharram. Known for its brick architecture (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). It is a retreat house, so admire it from outside unless you are attending something there.

Midday: eating on Avenida Cacique Lambaré

Cacique Lambaré is the city's commercial spine (InfoNegocios, 2025 (opens in a new tab)), and in the second half of 2025 it got the biggest road investment in 16 years (InfoNegocios, 2026 (opens in a new tab)). For an easy lunch:

After lunch, rest or pick something indoors: on 35 to 40 °C days, Paraguay's health ministry advises outdoor activity between 6:00 and 10:00 or 18:00 and 22:00 (La Nación, 2022 (opens in a new tab)).

Afternoon: park, bowling or beach

Choose one depending on who is with you:

Sunset: Costanera Sur and Cerro Lambaré

This is how the day should end. The Costanera Sur runs 8.1 km from Avenida Colón in Asunción to Cerro Lambaré, with wide pavements, a bike lane and a linear park of about 1,000 m with 13 food outlets, playgrounds, sand volleyball courts and an amphitheatre (Última Hora, 2024 (opens in a new tab)). Arrive an hour before sunset, walk or cycle towards the hill and have dinner in the linear park.

Cerro Lambaré is 156 m high, and at the top is the Monumento a la Paz Victoriosa, a lookout completed in 1982 with a statue of a cacique at its base (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). It sits in Asunción's Jukyty neighbourhood on the Lambaré border and has drawn more visitors since the riverfront opened on 20 July 2024 (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). Go up in daylight: in 2022 the site was neglected and had safety problems (ABC Color, 2022 (opens in a new tab)), and the environment ministry has since approved a 2024–2034 management plan for the protected landscape (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)).

For something special to finish, the Yacht y Golf Club Paraguayo is a resort and hotel with a private beach on the river (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab); InfoNegocios, 2025 (opens in a new tab)), with restaurants and a poolside bar (Hotels.com (opens in a new tab)). Call first to ask whether non-guests are welcome.

Getting there and around

  • From central Asunción: the Costanera Sur takes you to Lambaré without going down Avenida Félix Bogado (ABC Color, 2024 (opens in a new tab)).
  • From Villa Elisa or San Lorenzo: Avenida Defensores del Chaco gets badly congested (Última Hora (opens in a new tab)); allow extra time at rush hour.
  • In heavy rain: the town hall has asked drivers to avoid Cacique Lambaré crossings such as Río Apa, Humaitá, Héroes del 70 and Juan Bautista Rivarola because of flash flooding (ABC Color, 2023 (opens in a new tab)). Swap the riverfront for bowling or the mall that day.
  • At night: book a ride-hailing car and wait somewhere well lit, especially when leaving the hill area.
