How to choose: pharmacies
If you need a pharmacy open now in Asunción, at night or on a Sunday, pick a branch in the list above that is marked as open 24 hours and call before you leave to check they have your medicine. The big chains run branches that never close, but Sunday and holiday hours vary from branch to branch, even within the same chain.
How do I find a 24-hour pharmacy in Asunción tonight?
Check the hours posted for each branch, not for the chain. Two shops of the same brand can sit a few blocks apart, with one open all night and the other closing early on Sunday.
- Go to the nearest 24-hour branch, not the best-known one.
- Call or send a WhatsApp message with the drug name and strength: staff will tell you if it is in stock and set it aside.
- For a baby, or anything that needs refrigeration, ask directly whether that branch has it cold.
- Late at night, prefer a branch on a well-lit avenue with parking out front.
Which part of Asunción should I search in?
Asunción is small in kilometres but slow at rush hour. Search your own neighbourhood before you cross the city.
- Downtown (Centro): plenty of chain and independent pharmacies in a few blocks, but the centre empties out at night and on Sundays and several close.
- Villa Morra, Recoleta and Carmelitas: the busiest area after dark, along Mariscal López, España and Santa Teresa. Finding something open late is usually easier here.
- Sajonia, Barrio Obrero and the Costanera area: look on the main avenues, where the larger shops are.
Factor in roadworks. In September 2026 the city reported that Plan ASU 400 (opens in a new tab) works were still under way on Mariscal López, España and San Martín, plus Avenida De la Victoria. At rush hour on those roads, a pharmacy in your own barrio saves more time than a big branch across town.
Can I buy the medicine without a prescription?
It depends on the sale condition printed on the box, set by DINAVISA, Paraguay's health products regulator. Every medicine sold in Paraguay must show its health registration number on the package and is sold either over the counter or on prescription, depending on its category, as DINAVISA stresses in its pharmacy inspections.
A common surprise: adult cold and flu remedies are over the counter, but under DINAVISA Resolution 244/21 (opens in a new tab) syrups and drops for children under 12 need a prescription, and products with more than 60 mg of pseudoephedrine require a prescription the pharmacy keeps on file.
- Bring the original prescription, not a photo, if the box says prescription only.
- Antibiotics and psychiatric drugs: a reputable pharmacy will not sell them without a prescription.
- If the box has no health registration number, do not buy it.
Which pharmacy is cheapest in Paraguay?
There is no single answer, because prices change by product, brand and the day's promotion. What you can do is compare properly:
- Ask for the same active ingredient and strength. A locally made brand is often cheaper than the imported one.
- Ask about the bank promotion of the day. Banks and wallets run pharmacy cashback on certain weekdays, each with its own payment rules.
- If you are charged above the authorised price, you can report it: DINAVISA checks for sales above the set price.
How do I pay, and can I get delivery?
QR payment is everywhere. Bancard figures published in 2026 show 7 in 10 electronic payments are now made by QR (opens in a new tab), and pharmacies are among the businesses that use it most. Your bank or wallet app pays at the counter, and many shops also take Apple Pay or Google Pay. Foreign cards work in most chain branches, but carry some cash for a small neighbourhood pharmacy.
The big chains deliver by phone, WhatsApp or app. Before ordering, check that they reach your address at that hour, what delivery costs and, if a prescription is required, how to hand it over. For refrigerated medicines, Asunción's heat between November and March makes picking it up yourself worth it.
What if it is an emergency, not a pharmacy run?
If someone is seriously unwell, do not waste time hunting for a drug. The Health Ministry's ambulance service, SEME, answers on line 141. For a high fever in a baby, chest pain, trouble breathing or a poisoning, go straight to an emergency room and bring the box of whatever was taken.
FAQ
How was this list made?
We reviewed 224 businesses using data we collect from social media, the internet and in-person checks, ranked by rating adjusted for review count and by complete contact details. Advertisers do not pay for position.
Do businesses pay to be listed?
No. The order comes from the published method. Businesses can buy a space marked “Sponsored”, kept apart from the list.
How often is it updated?
We review lists regularly. This one was updated on October 9, 2026. If you spot outdated details, let us know.
Is there a pharmacy near me open now in Asunción?
Yes. Several chains run branches open all night, especially around Villa Morra and on the main avenues. Hours are set per branch, so check the one closest to you before going.
Do I need a prescription for medicine in Paraguay?
It depends on the sale condition printed on the box. Many everyday drugs are over the counter, but antibiotics, children's cold syrups and some controlled drugs need a prescription.
Can I pay with a foreign card or by phone?
Most chain branches take cards, QR payments and often Apple Pay or Google Pay. Carry some guaraníes in cash for small neighbourhood pharmacies.
What should I do in a medical emergency at night?
Call SEME, the Health Ministry's ambulance service, on 141, or go straight to an emergency room with the medicine box.
