How to choose: car dealers
To compare car dealerships in Asunción, ask each one for the same three things: a written price for the exact model, a test drive and a breakdown of what the handover includes. Many sit along the big avenues, such as Eusebio Ayala, one of the city's main commercial corridors (Última Hora (opens in a new tab)), so group your visits by area. And remember the car is only yours once the sale goes through a public deed.
How do you compare two dealerships?
Take a short list and ask the same questions in each showroom:
- Written price and currency: ask for a quote with trim, year and colour. If you get one figure in US dollars and another in guaraníes, ask which exchange rate they use and how long the offer is valid.
- What is included: deed, registration, number plate, first-year vehicle tax, insurance and first services. Two similar prices can end up far apart.
- Test drive: ask for one in the model and trim you will buy, not a similar one.
- Workshop and parts: ask where warranty services are done and how long you wait for a slot. A workshop far from home is a cost that repeats.
- Delivery time: if the car is not in stock, get the date in writing.
- Finance: compare the total instalment cost with your own bank or cooperative before signing with the lender offered in the showroom.
Which papers make the car yours?
In Paraguay, a vehicle can only be transferred by public deed under article 700 of the Civil Code; a private contract does not transfer ownership (Registro de Automotores (opens in a new tab)). The Judiciary sets out the rest:
- The seller has up to 20 days to formalise the deed; during that time you can do the physical inspection of the vehicle.
- Registration requires the original deed with two certified copies, two certified copies of the Certificado de Nacionalización and the Certificado de Verificación from the inspection plant.
- These steps are carried out before a notary public (Poder Judicial (opens in a new tab)).
The vehicle registry (Dirección del Registro de Automotores) is at Chile y Oliva in central Asunción, open Monday to Friday 7:00–13:00 (Poder Judicial (opens in a new tab)). According to the registry, registration is completed in about four working days (Registro de Automotores (opens in a new tab)). Ask the dealership who handles the deed and when you get your documents.
How much is the annual vehicle tax?
Law 7459/2025 sets the vehicle tax (patente) at 0.3% of the vehicle's taxable value, reduced by 5% a year until the car is 10 years old. The taxable value is set by the tax authority (DNIT) and the amount is the same in every municipality, plus each municipality's administrative fee (La Nación (opens in a new tab)). Add it to your first-year budget.
Is it worth waiting for the Cadam Motor Show?
The dealers' association, Cadam (Cámara de Distribuidores de Automotores y Maquinarias), holds a yearly show. The 29th edition, in 2026, ran on level -3 of Paseo La Galería until 9 August, with more than 40 brands, about 300 models and offers from banks, finance companies and cooperatives (ABC Color (opens in a new tab)). If you can wait, it is the quickest way to see many brands in one place and compare finance plans on the same day.
Which brands sell the most?
In the first four months of 2025, according to Cadam, Hyundai (13.7%), Toyota (12.3%) and Kia (11.3%) were the most imported new-car brands, followed by Chevrolet and Suzuki (InfoNegocios (opens in a new tab)). A brand with many cars on the road usually has more workshops and parts nearby, a plus for a daily driver.
Use these criteria to decide which Asunción dealership to buy from.
