How to choose: supermarkets
In Ciudad del Este, the best supermarket for your weekly shop is the one on your way home that keeps you out of downtown at rush hour. For a big shop, pick a branch with parking on Ruta PY02 or in residential areas such as Área 1 or Ciudad Nueva. For fruit, vegetables and meat in bulk, the Mercado de Abasto and Abasto Este in Minga Guazú usually work out better. The ranked list of supermarkets is above; this is how to pick yours.
Which part of Ciudad del Este suits a weekly shop?
The city runs along Ruta PY02: roughly 10 km of eight lanes once you count the service roads, Avenida Monseñor Rodríguez and Avenida San Blas. The urban core reaches about km 7, and km 8 to 13 is suburban (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)).
- Downtown and the Friendship Bridge area: this is where shoppers from Foz do Iguaçu and Puerto Iguazú concentrate. If you live in CDE, don't drive there for a big shop.
- The PY02 corridor: choose a branch on the service road on your side of the highway. You avoid U-turns with a full trunk.
- Área 1 and Ciudad Nueva: residential neighbourhoods where chains have opened large stores with their own parking, for example on Avenida Julio César Riquelme at km 7, with room for 139 cars and 64 motorbikes (Infonegocios, 2017 (opens in a new tab)).
- Living in Hernandarias, Minga Guazú or Presidente Franco? Your local store usually beats crossing CDE for a few items.
Supermarket or market for produce and meat?
Split the shop. The supermarket covers pantry, cleaning and packaged goods. For fresh food in quantity, the market wins:
- Mercado de Abasto de Ciudad del Este: more than 800 stalls selling produce and clothing (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). Go early, when produce is freshest and crowds are thinner.
- Abasto Este (Minga Guazú, km 14.5): the block with meat, dairy, eggs, chicken, fruit and vegetables, groceries and cleaning products opens 5:00 to 19:00 and sells both retail and wholesale. The food court and the complex's wholesale supermarket open 7:00 to 22:00, and there is parking for about 1,000 cars and 200 motorbikes (ABC Color, 2025 (opens in a new tab)).
For a large household or a small business, a trip to Abasto Este every two weeks plus the neighbourhood store for top-ups is usually the cheapest mix in time and money.
How to pay: guaraníes, card, QR or Pix?
Prices are in guaraníes. Since 2024, shops on the Bancard network can take Pix from Brazilian customers straight from their real-denominated accounts (Infonegocios (opens in a new tab)), with the shop receiving guaraníes (ABC Color (opens in a new tab)). If you plan to pay by Pix or in cash reais, ask at the till before your items are scanned and check the exchange rate they use.
When to go to avoid queues and heat
January averages 26 °C and the city has recorded 40.6 °C (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). In summer, carry a cooler bag for dairy, meat and frozen food, and make the supermarket your last stop, not your first. Weekday mornings are usually calmest. If you have to go in the afternoon, skip the bridge area and use your neighbourhood branch.
Coming from Brazil: what you can take back
Plenty of people from Foz shop for groceries in CDE. Two Brazilian rules matter before you fill the cart:
- Allowance: US$500 per person every 30 days when entering by land. It is individual and the Receita Federal tracks it nationwide (Gazeta do Povo, 2026 (opens in a new tab)).
- Food: since 4 February 2026, Brazil's agriculture ministry list bans fresh fruit and vegetables, honey and pork products other than canned ones from traveller baggage (SBT News, 2026 (opens in a new tab)). Buy fresh produce on your own side.
Quick list before you go
- Pick one main branch for the weekly shop and a backup near work.
- Split your list into "supermarket" (pantry, cleaning) and "market" (fruit, vegetables, meat).
- Keep reusable bags and a cooler bag in the car.
- If paying by Pix or in another currency, confirm at the till first.
