How to choose: supermarkets
For your weekly shop in Concepción, pick a supermarket on the route you already drive or walk every day, one that takes the payment method your bank discounts, and buy fruit, vegetables and fish at the market or the producers' fair. That way the dry goods and cleaning supplies go in one trip, and the fresh food comes from where it turns over fastest.
Supermarket, market or fair: what to buy where
- Supermarket: for the big shop of pantry staples, cleaning products, dairy and frozen food, with a trolley and fast checkouts.
- Mercado Municipal: a covered market open every day with fruit, vegetables and fish, on Presidente Franco about 100 metres west of Avenida Pinedo (Wikivoyage (opens in a new tab)). It is the place for fresh produce and for buying only what you will use that week.
- Producers' fair: the Asociación de Productores Feriantes de Concepción has its own site in the Itacurubí neighbourhood, where, according to ABC Color in 2015, growers sold fruit, vegetables, meat, butifarra sausage, chickens, farm eggs, cheese and honey (ABC Color (opens in a new tab)). Ask a local which days it runs before you go.
Many households combine all three: the supermarket once a week, and the market or fair for fresh food.
How to choose a supermarket for the big shop
- On your route: Avenida Agustín Fernando de Pinedo crosses the town north to south, and downtown commerce clusters on Presidente Franco and Mariscal Estigarribia (Wikivoyage (opens in a new tab)). A store on the way you already go beats one a few blocks closer as the crow flies.
- Parking: with a full trolley in the heat, parking near the door matters more than distance.
- Fresh counters: visit on a weekday and look at the produce and butcher sections. If they are good, you can do everything in one trip.
- Hours: check Sunday and holiday closing times before you leave the shop to the last minute.
How to spend less
In Paraguay QR codes now account for 68.1% of electronic payments, and supermarkets are where they are used most, with 35% of QR transactions, according to Bancard data for April 2026 (ABC Color (opens in a new tab)). Many bank promotions run through QR:
- Find out which day your bank or wallet gives a discount at your supermarket and do the big shop that day.
- Read the terms: there is usually a refund cap, and some deals work with only one card.
- Ask for the invoice (factura). Sedeco, the consumer protection office, says every sale must come with an invoice, and a sale sign must show the old price, the discount percentage and the current cash price in guaraníes (ABC Color (opens in a new tab)). If the till price does not match the shelf, raise it on the spot.
What about fish during the closed season?
Concepción sits on the Paraguay River and river fish is part of the local table. During the fishing ban, fishing and selling fish are not allowed: the 2025 ban started on 2 November and ran until 20 December in waters shared with Argentina and until 31 January 2026 in waters shared with Brazil (La Nación (opens in a new tab)). If you like to keep fish in the freezer, buy before November and check each year when the ban starts.
Heat and rain: getting your shopping home in good shape
Summer highs can reach 42 °C, and the rainiest months are November to January (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)).
- Bring a cool bag for meat, dairy and frozen food, and pick up chilled items last.
- If you have other stops, make the supermarket the final one.
- In a heavy storm, postpone the big shop. Loading the car in the rain and driving through flooded streets is not worth it.
Heading into the Chaco or further north?
Concepción is the last big town before places like Vallemí, Bahía Negra or Fuerte Olimpo, and the Aquidabán cargo boat leaves the port once a week for Bahía Negra (Wikivoyage (opens in a new tab)). If you will spend days upriver or on a ranch, buy your pantry supplies here and take water, because choices shrink further north.

We review lists regularly. This one was updated on October 9, 2026. If you spot outdated details, let us know.
Where can I buy fruit and vegetables in Concepción?
At the Mercado Municipal, a covered market open every day on Presidente Franco near Avenida Pinedo, or at the producers' fair in the Itacurubí neighbourhood.
Can I pay by QR at supermarkets in Concepción?
QR is the most used electronic payment in Paraguay and supermarkets lead its use. Still, check at the till and carry some cash for the market.
When is the best time for the big shop?
On the day your bank or wallet offers a discount at that store, and in summer early or at the end of your errands, with a cool bag.
Why is there no fresh river fish in November?
Because of the fishing ban, which prohibits catching and selling fish; the 2025 ban started on 2 November. Buy ahead and freeze it.
