How to choose: supermarkets
In Fernando de la Mora, pick your weekly supermarket by your daily route: one on your side of Avenida Mariscal Estigarribia, or on your way home from Asunción, with parking and a good fresh section. For top-ups during the week the neighbourhood shop is enough, and the farmers' fair is worth adding when it comes to town.
North side or south side?
Avenida Mariscal Estigarribia, the main road in from Asunción, splits the city into a Zona Norte and a Zona Sur (opens in a new tab). Crossing it at rush hour with a loaded car is what eats most time, so:
- For the big shop, choose a supermarket on your side of the avenue, with its own parking.
- If you live near Ruta Acceso Sur (now part of PY01 (opens in a new tab)), also check what's along that road; it is often closer than the centre.
- For top-ups, a neighbourhood shop you can reach on foot or by motorbike saves the parking hassle.
Working in Asunción? Shop on the way home
Fernando de la Mora is largely a commuter town: many people live here and work in Asunción (opens in a new tab), about 6 km from the city centre. If that's you, pin a supermarket on your route home (via Mariscal Estigarribia or Eusebio Ayala, depending on how you come) and shop there instead of getting home and heading out again. If Saturday is your only free day, go early.
Fresh produce: the supermarket plus the farmers' fair
Walk past the produce, butcher and dairy sections before you fill the trolley: if they look good midweek, the store turns its stock over well.
For fruit, vegetables and farm products, the Ferias de la Agricultura Familiar (family-farm markets) come to the city. In the week of 23 February 2026, for example, the farmers were at Paseo 1811 on Tuesday, from 7:00 to 15:00 (opens in a new tab). Venues and days rotate each week, so check the schedule in the local press before you go.
How to pay and make the most of offers
- QR: now the most common method: 7 in 10 electronic payments processed by Bancard are made by QR (opens in a new tab).
- Card discounts: banks run supermarket discount days, but read the small print. Before relying on a promotion, check its terms and conditions: which day it applies, whether there is a monthly cap on spending or refunds, whether it works with debit or only credit cards and which card brand, and when it ends. If your supermarket has a day for your card, do the big shop then.
- Sales: on a sale, the sign must show the previous price, the discount percentage and the cash price in guaraníes (opens in a new tab).
What if the till charges a different price?
SEDECO, the consumer protection office, advises you to ask the manager first to honour the shelf price; if they don't, photograph the price tag and your invoice and file a complaint on SEDECO's website (opens in a new tab). With that evidence, inspectors visit the store and prices are usually corrected.
That's why you should always ask for an invoice (factura): every sale must have one (opens in a new tab), and it's what you'll need if you have to complain.
Before you go
- Bring reusable bags and an insulated bag for frozen food on hot days.
- Check expiry dates on dairy and cold cuts, especially on offers.
- Search "supermercado" on your phone's map, filter by your area and check that day's opening hours before heading out, especially on public holidays.
