How to choose: gyms
In Asunción, the gym you will keep going to is the one on a route you already take and open at the hour you can actually train. Before comparing monthly fees, try two places at that hour and read the whole contract: sign-up fee, maintenance fee, minimum term and how to cancel.
Where should it be?
In the capital, traffic matters more than price. A gym five blocks from home but across a jammed avenue at 6 p.m. is the one you quit by March.
- Pick one on your route: near home if you train early, near work if you go after.
- By bus: the E1 electric bus line has linked San Lorenzo and Asunción along Eusebio Ayala since December 2025, and the E2 started in February 2026 along Mariscal López, running from 04:00 to 01:45 (La Nación (opens in a new tab)). A gym near those stops can save you the car.
- Roadworks: in September 2026 the city had Plan ASU 400 works on streets including Mariscal López, España and San Martín (Municipalidad de Asunción (opens in a new tab)). If your gym is around there, try the trip at rush hour before you pay.
- Parking: if you drive or ride a motorbike, ask whether there is space and whether it costs extra.
When to train in the heat
Paraguay's Ministry of Health recommends exercising ideally before 10:00 and after 17:00, drinking water before, during and after even if you are not thirsty, and choosing well-ventilated places such as tree-lined parks or licensed gyms (MSPBS, January 2026 (opens in a new tab)). If you are over 40, overweight, have high blood pressure or diabetes, or have been inactive for a long time, the ministry advises more frequent check-ups than the yearly one.
When you visit a gym, check:
- Whether the air conditioning or ventilation actually works in the weights room and the class studio.
- Whether there is a water fountain or you need to bring all your water.
- When it gets busy. Empty at mid-morning can mean packed at 7 p.m.
- What to do if you feel dizzy: the ministry says stop, move somewhere cool, drink water and rest (MSPBS (opens in a new tab)).
What to look for in a trial session
- A trainer on the floor who shows you the machines and sets up a routine, not just hands you a locker key.
- Enough free weights and machines for your routine at your hour, without queuing for everything.
- Group classes: a written timetable, whether there is space and whether you must book.
- Clean changing rooms and showers, especially if you go before work.
- Weekend and holiday hours, which may be shorter. If Sunday is your only free day, confirm them.
What the contract has to say
If the gym asks you to sign a standard contract you cannot change, Paraguay's consumer protection law, Ley 1334/98 (opens in a new tab), calls these adhesion contracts and sets clear rules:
- They must be printed legibly and in clear terms (art. 25).
- Any unclear clause is interpreted in the consumer's favour (art. 27).
- Clauses letting the provider change the price or other terms on its own are abusive and void (art. 28).
- The quoted price must include taxes and the payment method (art. 15).
- If you signed outside the premises, for example by phone or at home, you have seven days from signing to withdraw (art. 26).
Before you pay, ask and get in writing: sign-up fee, monthly fee, any annual maintenance charge, minimum term, whether you can freeze the plan for travel or injury, and how to stop automatic card debits. If a cheaper plan ties you in for a year, add up the total, not the monthly fee.
QR is Paraguay's most used electronic payment method, 68.1% of electronic payments in April 2026 according to Bancard (ABC Color (opens in a new tab)). Ask for an invoice (factura).
Free outdoor training
To walk, run or cycle without a fee, the Costanera Sur riverside road runs about 8 km from the end of Calle Colón to the Cerro Lambaré area, designed with wide footpaths, bike lanes and parking (Última Hora (opens in a new tab); ABC Color (opens in a new tab)). Following the ministry's advice, go early or after 17:00, with water and sunscreen. You can mix two or three gym days with one outdoors.
