  5. Before you go

For breakfast in Asunción this weekend, start Saturday early downtown (El Bolsi opens at 7:00 and Kaffe'i at 9:00) or head to Karu's Saturday brunch in Las Mercedes. On Sunday, pair a late breakfast at Casa Clari with a walk on the Costanera, or book a table at El Café de Acá in Villa Morra or at Lapatiss in Mburucuyá. Here is the plan day by day, with addresses and what to order.

Saturday: early start downtown

Both are in the microcentro, so if you have errands downtown on Saturday, eat there and carry on on foot.

Saturday brunch: Karu in Las Mercedes

Karu has been a sourdough bakery since 2011, using local, seasonal ingredients (La Nación, 2022 (opens in a new tab)). Its brunch runs on Saturdays, with eggs Benedict, avocado toast, pancakes and options with cassava, chipa or mbejú (Infonegocios, 2024 (opens in a new tab)). The New York Times recommended it for its patio under mango trees (Infobae/NYT, 2024 (opens in a new tab)). Go early: Saturday morning is when it is busiest.

Sunday: late breakfast and the Costanera

Casa Clari (Manzana de la Rivera, Ayolas 129). A café-bar in a historic house with a terrace behind the Palacio de los López. It opens Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 and serves breakfast and afternoon snacks (Última Hora (opens in a new tab); La Nación (opens in a new tab)). It suits an unhurried Sunday, not an early start.

Then walk down to the Costanera, the riverside avenue that runs past the Historic Centre by the Cabildo, Congress and the Cathedral. On Sundays and public holidays the bay-side lane is closed to traffic and becomes a walking space (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)).

Sunday brunch in Villa Morra or Mburucuyá

  • Heat: in summer, Paraguay's Health Ministry advises outdoor activity before 10:00 or after 17:00 (MSPBS (opens in a new tab)). If you walk the Costanera on Sunday, go early or late afternoon.
