In this guide
For a family parrillada in Asunción this weekend, the easiest Sunday lunch is a churrascaria-style buffet such as Acuarela or Paulista Grill, or a Paraguayan grill such as La Paraguayita; for Friday or Saturday dinner, Paseo La Galería puts Lo de Osvaldo and La Cabrera under one roof with a food court open until midnight. Book ahead, especially if you are more than six.
Sunday lunch: where does the whole family fit?
- Acuarela Churrasquería. On Mariscal López near San Martín, open since 1987. Meat comes to the table on skewers and the buffet of salads, sides, desserts and drinks is included; there is parking and they take bookings (Visit Paraguay (opens in a new tab); ABC Color, 2013 (opens in a new tab)). It works with kids because everyone serves themselves.
- Paulista Grill. Gaúcho-style churrasco on Avenida San Martín, with salads, sides, parking and bookings (Visit Paraguay (opens in a new tab); Tripadvisor (opens in a new tab)). It is close to Acuarela, so if one is full you can try the other without crossing town.
- La Paraguayita. A family business since 1977 on Avenida Brasilia, with mixed grill platters, chipa guazú and sopa paraguaya (InfoNegocios, 2023 (opens in a new tab); Visit Paraguay (opens in a new tab)). Open for lunch and dinner. The pick if you want home-style Paraguayan food.
Celebrating a birthday or hosting visiting relatives?
- Patria. A wood-fired grill with rooted Paraguayan cooking on Alberto de Souza between Cruz del Chaco and Cruz del Defensor, seating about 100 (Visit Paraguay (opens in a new tab)). It has two private rooms for 24 and closes entirely for private events (InfoNegocios, 2022 (opens in a new tab)), so call several days ahead.
- La Cabrera at Shopping del Sol. A dining room for 60 and a private room for 15 (InfoNegocios, 2019 (opens in a new tab)). It is the priciest of the group, with four price signs on Tripadvisor (opens in a new tab). For a big celebration table, ask for the private room.
Friday or Saturday night: Paseo La Galería
Paseo La Galería, at Santa Teresa and Aviadores del Chaco, has covered parking (La Nación, 2016 (opens in a new tab)) and two grills in the same building: Lo de Osvaldo (official site (opens in a new tab)) and La Cabrera (InfoNegocios, 2023 (opens in a new tab)). If the wait is long, the food court is open Sunday to Thursday from 11:00 to 23:00 and until 00:00 on Friday and Saturday, and the Terrazas del Paseo until 01:00 on Friday and Saturday (Paseo La Galería (opens in a new tab)). Nobody goes home hungry.
Lo de Osvaldo downtown, for football fans
The original branch is at Cerro Corá 883, between Tacuary and EE. UU. (official site (opens in a new tab)). It is a Paraguayan-football-themed grill with smoked tapa de cuadril (rump cap) as the house cut (InfoNegocios (opens in a new tab)), chipa guazú among the sides and homemade sausages (InfoNegocios, 2024 (opens in a new tab)). Book through the form on its website or by WhatsApp. The website does not list opening hours, so confirm them when you book, especially on match days.
How do you pay and what should you ask?
- Churrascaria: you pay per person. In 2013 ABC Color found the price covered the buffet and dessert, with drinks extra at some places (ABC Color, 2013 (opens in a new tab)). Ask for the day's price, whether it changes at weekends and how much they charge for children.
- À la carte grill: you pay per dish; for a family, order a sharing parrillada and add sides.
- Payment: Visit Paraguay's listings for Acuarela, Paulista Grill, La Paraguayita and Patria all show card payment. In April 2026, 68.1% of electronic payments on the Bancard network were made by QR (ABC Color (opens in a new tab)).
What to do after Sunday lunch
- Costanera de Asunción: the bay-side lane is closed to traffic on Sundays and public holidays (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)), good for a walk with the kids.
- Botanical Garden: entry is free (NYT via Infobae, 2024 (opens in a new tab)), with trees over 150 years old and a natural history museum in Carlos Antonio López's house (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)).
In summer, Paraguay's Health Ministry advises outdoor activity before 10:00 or after 17:00 (MSPBS (opens in a new tab)), so save the walk for late afternoon.
