In this guide
Local shopping in Limpio comes down to three places: Abasto Norte on Ruta PY03 for fruit, vegetables and pantry goods in bulk; Plaza Norte, right across from it, for brand stores, food and an indoor stroll; and the town centre around the San José parish church for the municipal market and everyday errands. Pick the area by what you need and avoid crossing the highway at rush hour.
What to buy where
- Abasto Norte (Ruta PY03): about 180 units selling fruit and veg, meat, dairy, cold cuts and pantry goods (ABC Color, 2021 (opens in a new tab)). It sells both to families and to neighbourhood corner shops (ABC Color (opens in a new tab)) and has plenty of parking (InfoNegocios, 2025 (opens in a new tab)). This is the stop for a big fresh-food shop.
- Plaza Norte: opened on 19 July 2025 diagonally across from Abasto Norte, with more than 27,500 m² and about 30 units in its first phase, including Meta Sports, Sport House, Pizza Hut, Don Vito, Café Martínez, La Clementina, Sky Games and Smart Fit (ABC Color (opens in a new tab); InfoNegocios (opens in a new tab)). Parking holds 320 cars and 30 motorbikes (ABC Color (opens in a new tab)). Good for sportswear, a meal and several errands in one stop.
- Town centre: the Mercado Municipal sits around the San José parish church and Plaza Silvestre Aveiro (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). For small errands, park once and walk.
- Your neighbourhood: for the weekly shop see our guide to supermarkets in Limpio; for clothes, clothing stores in Limpio.
Where to buy something typical of Limpio
Limpio is known for hats and baskets woven from karanda'y palm leaf (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). Weavers work from home in the rural districts: in 2022 one artisan from the Juan de Salazar area sold women's hats for G. 30,000 to 35,000 and baskets for G. 15,000 to 17,000, and also took large orders from companies (ABC Color, 2022 (opens in a new tab)). If you need several pieces for an event or a corporate gift, order weeks ahead and bring cash.
In September, Abasto Norte hosts the Paseo de las Flores plant fair: in 2026 it ran from 17 to 21 September, 07:00 to 17:00, with plants from G. 2,000 and free parking (ABC Color, 2026 (opens in a new tab)).
When to go so the PY03 does not eat your day
- Avoid the jammed highway: in April 2026 parked trucks caused a 5–6 km queue between central Limpio and Mariano Roque Alonso (Última Hora (opens in a new tab)). Check traffic in your maps app before you leave.
- Wait after a storm: in April 2024 the Itay and Damián streams overflowed, sweeping away vehicles and cutting roads (Última Hora (opens in a new tab)).
- Weekends at the Abasto: that is when families stock up (ABC Color (opens in a new tab)). Arrive early to choose calmly.
- End of year: the Abasto changes its hours. In 2021 it stayed open until 23:00 on 23 December and closed at 13:00 on the 24th and 31st (ABC Color (opens in a new tab)). Check that year's hours before going.
How to pay and what to ask for
- QR or cash: QR is now the most used electronic payment method (ABC Color, 2026 (opens in a new tab)), but bring cash for market stalls and artisans.
- Invoice: every sale of goods and services must come with a factura (Sedeco via ABC Color (opens in a new tab)). Without it, any complaint gets harder.
- Returns: Paraguay's consumer law (Ley 1334 (opens in a new tab)) gives no general right to exchange an item in store; each shop sets its own policy. Ask before you pay.
- Instalments: if offered financing, get the cash price and the total payable in writing.
- Bank promotions: for its first anniversary Plaza Norte ran "Rebajas de Plaza" from 17 to 19 July 2026 with cashback from some banks (InfoNegocios (opens in a new tab)). Ask at the till whether your card has a deal that day.
If you cannot find it in Limpio
Following the PY03 towards Asunción, Mariano Roque Alonso has Shopping Mariano, on the former Transchaco at Manuel Irala Fernández (Shopping Mariano (opens in a new tab)), with more than 14 food outlets (ABC Color, 2023 (opens in a new tab)). The food court opens 11:00–23:00 Sunday to Thursday and until midnight on Friday and Saturday (Shopping Mariano (opens in a new tab)). Combine it with the drive home if you work in the capital.
