If you arrive in Villarrica by bus, you get off at the municipal bus terminal, right in the town centre and near Mercado Municipal No. 1. The main square, the town hall and most hotels are a short ride or walk away, so the first hour is simple: water, small cash, a short transfer to where you're staying, then sightseeing.

Where is the Villarrica bus terminal?

The terminal sits on Ruy Díaz de Melgarejo and Gregorio Benítez streets, near Mariscal López, in the town centre; big coaches reach it through narrow streets, so expect the last few blocks to be slow (ABC Color, 2018 (opens in a new tab)).

The old building was demolished and rebuilt on the same site; during the works, buses used a temporary terminal about 1.5 km away (Infonegocios, 2025 (opens in a new tab)). By Holy Week 2026 the town was welcoming travellers at the newly opened terminal with chipa, cocido, music and dance (Última Hora (opens in a new tab)). If someone sends you old directions to the temporary terminal, ignore them: arrivals are back in the centre.

How do you get there from Asunción?

Villarrica is about 172 km from Asunción (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)).

The first hour: what to sort out at the terminal

  1. Food and water. Mercado Municipal No. 1 is near the terminal, with about 375 stalls selling vegetables, meat, cooked food and clothes (ABC Color, 2022 (opens in a new tab)). It's the easiest place for a chipa or quick lunch; bring small notes.
  2. Paying. QR codes are now Paraguay's most used electronic payment, 68.1% of Bancard transactions (ABC Color, 2026 (opens in a new tab)), but QR usually needs a local bank or wallet app. Visitors should carry guaraní cash, especially for market stalls.
  3. Heat. In December 2017 the high reached 37 °C and the town record is 40.4 °C (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). Arriving at midday in summer, don't drag a suitcase ten blocks: take a car.

Getting from the terminal to your hotel

  • Staying in the centre: the town hall is at General Díaz and Mariscal López (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)), with Plaza de los Héroes in front of it (Última Hora (opens in a new tab)). With light luggage and outside the hottest hours, you can walk.
  • Staying on Route 8 or at the edge of town: take a taxi or arrange a pickup with your host beforehand. Send them your bus's expected arrival time on WhatsApp.
  • The karumbe: in 2022 horse-drawn carts waited beside the terminal, Monday to Saturday 6:00 to 12:00, at G. 20,000 per person for a short ride (ABC Color, 2022 (opens in a new tab)). With the new terminal, ask whether they're still there before relying on one.
