In this guide
In Villarrica you basically choose between a hotel in the centre, close to Plaza de los Héroes and walkable to everything, or one at the edge of town with more quiet and a pool for the heat. The city is 172 km east of Asunción, so most visitors come for a weekend; around Easter and long weekends, book a few days ahead.
Centre or edge of town?
- Centre: best if you arrive without a car, travel for work or want to walk. You can reach the plaza, the old town with its colonial houses and murals, and the urban circuits ABC Color (opens in a new tab) recommends: Paseo Manú, the Chiquitunga gardens and the old railway station.
- Town entrance: better if you drive and want a quiet patio and pool. It is also quicker for day trips to Itapé or Independencia.
Villarrica has a branch of the national university (UNA) and a regional campus of the Universidad Católica (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)), so weekdays bring plenty of business and academic visitors. If that is you, ask for an early breakfast and a desk in the room.
Hotels named by local press
In its January 2026 getaway guide, ABC Color (opens in a new tab) lists Hotel Centro Villarrica, Villarrica Palace Hotel, Mburucuyá Hotel Boutique and Hotel Ybytyruzú, among others. All of them also appear on booking sites such as Expedia (opens in a new tab); these three have the most published detail:
- Mburucuyá Hotel Boutique: a former family home turned into a small hotel at the entrance to the city. InfoNegocios (2022) (opens in a new tab) lists a pool, a grill area and buffet breakfast included; it has no restaurant, but there are places to eat and supermarkets nearby (InfoNegocios, 2020 (opens in a new tab)). The owner advised booking about eight days ahead for weekends.
- Hotel Centro Villarrica: right in the centre. Its Skyscanner (opens in a new tab) listing shows a seasonal outdoor pool, restaurant, air conditioning and Wi-Fi, and guests mention it is a walk from Plaza de los Héroes.
- Hotel Ybytyruzú: listed by ABC Color and among Villarrica hotels on Expedia; ask directly about breakfast and parking.
Rates move often: in 2022 Mburucuyá quoted G. 150,000 to G. 550,000 depending on the room, based on double occupancy (InfoNegocios (opens in a new tab)). Ask for the current rate on WhatsApp before paying a deposit.
When to book further ahead
- Easter week (Semana Santa): many people come home to Villarrica for the holiday. In 2026 the city welcomed travellers at the bus terminal with chipa, cocido, music and dance (Última Hora (opens in a new tab)).
- May: 14 May is the city's founding anniversary and its biggest celebration (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)).
- Summer and long weekends: the pool becomes the deciding factor, so check it is open on your dates.
Midweek, a message a few days ahead is usually enough.
What to ask before paying a deposit
- The exact address and a map pin, since some hotels are central and others at the town entrance.
- Whether the rate is per person or per room; Paraguayan hotels quote both ways.
- Whether breakfast is included and what time it starts if you leave early.
- Secure parking if you are driving.
- Whether they take cards or QR payments, or only bank transfer and cash.
What to do from your hotel
From a base in Villarrica you can plan the weekend like this, following ABC Color (opens in a new tab):
- In town: Parque Manuel Ortiz Guerrero, with the Ykuá Pytã lake, a trail, and capybaras, herons and ducks.
- Itapé, a few kilometres away: the Virgen del Paso shrine and Ysoró beach on the Tebicuarymí River, busy on hot days.
- Independencia, in the Ybytyruzú hills: the Suizo, Pa'i and Cantera waterfalls, Cerro Akatí and farm stays.
If you plan a day at the waterfalls, a hotel at the town entrance saves you crossing the centre on the way out.
