Weekend in Villarrica: a two-day plan for the city and the Ybytyruzú hills

A two-day Villarrica plan: the city on Saturday, Independencia's waterfalls and hills on Sunday, with prices, access and dates.

A sunlit cobblestone street of cream colonial houses, palm trees, a bakery awning, and a green cart of colorful cotton candy.

A weekend in Villarrica works best with Saturday in town (the park, the museum, the old station district and a night out) and Sunday in the Ybytyruzú hills around Independencia, at the Salto Suizo waterfall or Cerro Acatí. Villarrica is about 172 km from Asunción (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)): a same-day round trip is possible, but with one night you see twice as much and drive back rested.

Saturday morning: park and historic centre

  • Parque Manuel Ortiz Guerrero. It surrounds the Ykuá Pytã lagoon, with capybaras, ducks and birds, the Fuente de los Enamorados fountain and the monument holding the poet's remains; enter on Calle Dr. Bottrel from Mayor Bullo or Azara (ABC Color, 2026 (opens in a new tab)). Go early: December highs have hit 37 °C and the city record is 40.4 °C (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)).
  • Museo Municipal Maestro Fermín López and the Catedral del Espíritu Santo. The museum sits behind the cathedral in an 1842 house, with a room devoted to Ortiz Guerrero (ABC Color (opens in a new tab)). It is your indoor plan for the hottest hours; check opening times with the municipality.
  • Lunch on Boulevard Vicente Mario. More than 50 food outlets, from burgers to Chinese (InfoNegocios, 2025 (opens in a new tab)).

Saturday afternoon and evening: station district and a night out

For more bars and nightlife, see places to go out in Villarrica.

Sunday: Independencia and the Ybytyruzú hills

Independencia lies at the foot of the Ybytyruzú range, 179 km from Asunción, with no toll or entry checkpoint (La Nación, 2024 (opens in a new tab)). Expect waterfalls, trails, viewpoints, zip lines and horse rides. Pick one of these two:

Prices date from 2022–2023, so carry extra cash. Wear shoes with grip, bring water and repellent, and skip it after heavy rain.

A gentler plan B: Itapé

If you'd rather not hike, Itapé is about 20 km away, or 23 km on the paved road via Loma Hovy (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). Playa Ysoró on the Tebicuarymí river fills up in the hot season (ABC Color (opens in a new tab)). Avoid 18 December, the Virgen del Paso feast, if you want calm: over 60,000 people come (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)).

Which weekends to pick?

Getting there and around

By car, drive from Asunción to Coronel Oviedo, then about 42 km on Route PY08 (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). Villarrica has a bus terminal (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)), but for Sunday in the hills a car is far easier, as the last stretches are dirt. If you drink on Saturday night, don't drive: Paraguay has zero alcohol tolerance at the wheel (ABC Color (opens in a new tab)). For a single-day visit, see our Villarrica travel guide.
