In Villarrica, plan the day's food around lunch: breakfast early, a proper lunch indoors before the heat peaks, dinner once the sun drops. For an easy lunch head to Boulevard Vicente Mario, with more than 50 food outlets, or Mercado Municipal Nº 1 if you get there early; for dinner, look downtown and along Route 8.

How do meals fit around the heat?

On hot days Paraguay's Health Ministry and the IPS health service advise avoiding the sun from 10:00 to 17:00 and drinking water before you feel thirsty (ABC Color, 2026 (opens in a new tab)). Villarrica can top 35 °C in December (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). That shapes the day:

  • Early: breakfast and the outdoor part of your plan, such as Parque Manuel Ortiz Guerrero.
  • Midday: an unhurried lunch indoors, the main meal of the day.
  • Siesta hours: rest, or something indoors like the Museo Fermín López behind the cathedral (ABC Color, 2026 (opens in a new tab)).
  • From 17:00: a snack or tereré in the plaza, then dinner.

Where to have lunch, depending on your route

  • Boulevard Vicente Mario: more than 50 food outlets, from burgers to Chinese food (Infonegocios, 2025 (opens in a new tab)). The answer when a group can't agree.
  • Mercado Municipal Nº 1: downtown, beside the bus terminal, with around 375 stalls selling produce, meat, clothes and cooked food (ABC Color, 2022 (opens in a new tab)). A quick, cheap lunch if you arrive by bus. Go early: it gets crowded and stalls spill onto the pavement.
  • Downtown, between the plazas: Plaza de los Héroes faces the town hall and Plaza de la Libertad sits beside the cathedral (Última Hora (opens in a new tab)), so you are close to the museum and the park for the afternoon.

Which Guairá dishes should you order?

Villarrica is proud of its traditional cooking. The dishes the city promotes are kavure, pajagua mascada, mbeju, sopa paraguaya (a savoury corn cake), so'o apu'a and vori vori (Última Hora (opens in a new tab)). Kavure and mbeju suit a mid-afternoon break with cocido or tereré; vori vori, a hearty soup, is a lunch dish, best in winter.

The local oddity is the hamburguesa gua'i, an "inside-out" burger with the meat outside and the bread in the middle, plus cheese, olives and caramelised onion (Última Hora (opens in a new tab)). It is sold downtown; ask for it by name.

Sundays and evenings: what changes

On Sundays many kitchens only open for lunch. A clear example is Pan y Circo, a restaurant-bar on Boulevard Iturbe near Comuneros, on Route 8, serving pizzas, sharing plates, drinks and a weekend grill (Infonegocios, 2023 (opens in a new tab)). Its Instagram (opens in a new tab) lists Monday to Saturday 11:00 to midnight, and Sunday only until 15:00. On a Sunday, make lunch the main meal and have a plan for the evening.

Dates when the food is in the street

  • June, San Juan: the festival at the old railway station. In 2025 it started at 18:00 with more than 100 food stalls and free entry (ABC Color, 2025 (opens in a new tab)). Make it dinner: kavure, mbeju and pastel mandi'o.
  • May: the 14th is the city's anniversary, and the Espíritu Santo patron-saint festival takes place in Parque Ortiz Guerrero (ABC Color, 2026 (opens in a new tab)). On those days, lunch early or book.

How do you pay for food?

QR codes already account for 68.1% of electronic payments in Paraguay (ABC Color, 2026 (opens in a new tab)), so restaurants and boulevard outlets usually take them. At the market, the Feria Amistad farmers' market on Plaza Libertad (opens in a new tab) and festival stalls, carry cash in small notes. More in cash, banks and payments in Villarrica.
