With kids in Villarrica, the safest bet is Parque Manuel Ortiz Guerrero: a lagoon, capybaras, ducks and shade right in the centre. Add the Fermín López museum, the murals in the Estación neighbourhood and, if you have the day, a river swim in Itapé or a walk to the waterfalls of Independencia.

Parks for kids in Villarrica

  • Parque Manuel Ortiz Guerrero. The city's big park, in the Centro neighbourhood. Enter from Dr. Bottrel street, off Mayor Bullo or Azara. Inside is the Ykuá Pytã lagoon, with paths, trees and animals kids can see up close: capybaras, ducks, fish and birds (ABC Color, 2026 (opens in a new tab)). There is also the Fuente de los Enamorados and the poet Manuel Ortiz Guerrero's tomb. Bring a blanket: it is the best picnic spot in town.
  • Parque del Guairá. For cycling or walking, with an outdoor gym and sports courts (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). Good for older kids to run off energy.

Museums and short walks downtown

  • Museo Municipal Maestro Fermín López. Behind the Cathedral, in an 1842 house, with relics of the Triple Alliance War, Chaco War weapons, old coins and banknotes, Indigenous objects and a room on Manuel Ortiz Guerrero. Handy for school-age kids' history homework.
  • Catedral del Espíritu Santo. Next to the museum, so you can do both together.
  • Casa Cultural Ayala Talavera. On General Díaz street downtown, with a permanent painting exhibition by Guairá artists (Última Hora (opens in a new tab)).
  • Estación neighbourhood. The old railway station no longer runs trains, but you can walk around and take photos; a few steps away, the 1940s silo is covered in murals.

Tip: look up the "Circuitos de Villarrica" map on your map app; it helps plan the walk (ABC Color (opens in a new tab)).

Family festivals

  • Carnaval Guaireño (early February): run by the municipality and considered the country's second carnival after Encarnación's.
  • San Juan festival (June), at the old railway station. The 2024 edition had a kids' area with a mini train, merry-go-round and prize fishing, traditional games and food like mbeju and pastel mandi'o, with free entry from 18:00 (ABC Color (opens in a new tab)).
  • Fiesta Patronal del Espíritu Santo in Parque Ortiz Guerrero, free entry.
  • Festival de la Raza (12 October) at the Ycuá Pytá stadium.

Day trips near Villarrica

  • Itapé. About 20 km away on the Tebicuarymí river. The Ysoró bathing spot fills up in summer (ABC Color (opens in a new tab)). The town has the Virgen del Paso sanctuary; skip 18 December, its feast day, if you want to avoid crowds.
  • Independencia. In the Ybytyruzú hills: Salto Suizo, Salto Pa'i, Salto Cantera and Cerro Akatí, plus farms offering rural experiences (ABC Color (opens in a new tab)). Best with kids who walk well; bring trainers and water.

Eating with kids and getting there

  • Where to eat: Boulevard Vicente Mario has more than 50 food outlets, from burgers to Chinese (Infonegocios (opens in a new tab)), so picky eaters are covered.
  • Getting there: Villarrica is about 172 km from Asunción. Ruta PY08 links it north to Coronel Oviedo and south to Caazapá; the city has a bus terminal and local buses.
  • Weather: summers are hot; do the park in the morning and the museum during the midday heat.
