Getting around Villarrica: on foot, by taxi and by karumbé

Villarrica's centre is walkable; for the rest, a taxi with an agreed fare or a karumbé. Move before 10:00 or after 17:00 in hot weather.

Yellow checkered taxis, a white bus with a yellow stripe, and helmeted motorcyclists travel a palm-lined avenue past a crosswalk.

Villarrica is easy to get around on foot: the bus terminal, Mercado Nº 1, the two main plazas, the cathedral and Parque Manuel Ortiz Guerrero all sit within a few blocks of each other in the centre. For anything further, take a taxi with the fare agreed before you get in, or try the karumbé, the town's horse-drawn cart. The real trick is timing: walk early or late, not at midday.

How do you get to Villarrica, and where does the bus drop you?

Villarrica is 172 km from Asunción (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). By car you take the PY02 to Coronel Oviedo and then drive about 42 km south on Route PY08 (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). Paraguay has a zero-alcohol limit for drivers (ABC Color, 2021 (opens in a new tab)).

Long-distance buses arrive at the bus terminal in the centre, next to Mercado Municipal Nº 1 (ABC Color, 2025 (opens in a new tab)). The terminal was rebuilt on the same site. During the works, buses used a temporary terminal 1.5 km away, and by Easter 2026 the new building was open (Última Hora, 2026 (opens in a new tab)). Fares are set by the transport regulator Dinatran, which publishes the current table and asks passengers to report overcharging (Hoy, 2025 (opens in a new tab)).

Tip: the terminal is already downtown. If your room is under ten blocks away and you travel light, walk; with suitcases in strong sun, take a taxi.

What you can do on foot: the downtown loop

All of these are a few blocks apart:

Start with the park first thing, move on to the cathedral and museum, and keep Barrio Estación for late afternoon. The hour-by-hour version is in our short-visit guide to Villarrica.

Taxis and the karumbé: when walking doesn't make sense

What time of day should you move around?

On hot days Paraguay's Health Ministry and the IPS social-security health service advise staying out of the sun from 10:00 to 17:00 and drinking water before you feel thirsty (ABC Color, 2026 (opens in a new tab)). Villarrica's record high is 40.4 °C, and storms flood low-lying streets (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). In practice:

  • Before 10:00: walks, the park, errands on foot.
  • Midday: short taxi hops and indoor stops; see our rainy-day and indoor ideas for Villarrica.
  • After 17:00: Barrio Estación and the plazas.
  • In a storm: wait for the water to drain before crossing low areas on foot.

Trips out of town: Itapé and Salto Suizo

  • Itapé: about 20 km away; the paved road via Loma Hovy (around 23 km) is the one to take after rain (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). On 18 December, the Virgen del Paso festival, more than 60,000 people arrive, so expect heavy traffic.
  • Salto Suizo: in Independencia, 38 km away; the last 8 km from Melgarejo are dirt road (ABC Color, 2023 (opens in a new tab)). Without a car, agree a return trip with a taxi driver, and skip it after heavy rain.
