For a short visit to Villarrica, keep the day in the centre: Manuel Ortiz Guerrero Park and its lagoon in the morning, the Fermín López museum and the cathedral at midday, and the murals of the Estación neighbourhood in the afternoon. Everything is walkable or a short drive apart, so half a day covers the highlights; with a full day, add a swim in Itapé or the hike to Salto Suizo.
Morning: Manuel Ortiz Guerrero Park
The city's big park wraps around the Ykuá Pytã lagoon, with trees, trails and places to sit. Capybaras, ducks, fish and birds live there and visitors can feed them (ABC Color, 2026 (opens in a new tab)). Inside are the Fuente de los Enamorados fountain and the Panambi Vera monument, where the poet Manuel Ortiz Guerrero is buried.
- Where: downtown; enter on Calle Dr. Bottrel from Mayor Bullo or Azara.
- Tip: go early. Villarrica has seen December highs of 37 °C and a record of 40.4 °C (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)), so in summer the park is a morning or late-afternoon plan. Bring water.
Midday: museum, cathedral and cultural house
When the heat peaks, move indoors, all within a few blocks:
- Museo Municipal Maestro Fermín López. Behind the Espíritu Santo cathedral in an 1842 house, with a room on Manuel Ortiz Guerrero (manuscripts, portraits, letters) (ABC Color, 2026 (opens in a new tab)) and items from the War of the Triple Alliance and the Chaco War (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). Check opening hours with the municipality first.
- Espíritu Santo Cathedral. Right next to the museum; one of seven historic churches on the city's religious circuit.
- Casa Cultural Ayala Talavera. On Calle General Díaz, with a permanent show of painters from Guairá (Última Hora (opens in a new tab)).
- Lunch: Boulevard Vicente Mario has more than 50 food outlets, from burgers to Chinese (Infonegocios, 2025 (opens in a new tab)), handy when a group cannot agree.
Afternoon: the old station, murals and Paseo Manú
Once the sun drops, walk. The old railway station no longer runs trains but is one of the most photographed spots, and next to it stands a 1940s grain silo covered in murals and protected as heritage. The town walk continues past historic houses, the mural route, Paseo Manú and the Chiquitunga gardens (ABC Color, 2026 (opens in a new tab)).
- Tip: search your map app for the Circuitos de Villarrica map, which marks the walking routes (ABC Color (opens in a new tab)).
Evening: theatre or dinner on Route 8
- Teatro Municipal. Reopened in late June 2026 after almost fifteen years closed, with a gala called Renace el teatro (Última Hora, 2026 (opens in a new tab)). Shows are announced at short notice on the municipality's social media.
- Pan y Circo. A bar-restaurant on Boulevard Iturbe near Comuneros, on Route 8, with drinks, pizza, sharing plates and a weekend grill (Infonegocios, 2023 (opens in a new tab)). Its Instagram (opens in a new tab) lists Monday to Saturday 11:00 to midnight and Sunday until 15:00.
With a full day: Itapé or Salto Suizo
- Itapé (half day). About 20 km away; Playa Ysoró on the Tebicuarymí River fills up in the hot season (ABC Color (opens in a new tab)). The town also has the Virgen del Paso shrine; on its feast day, 18 December, more than 60,000 people arrive (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)), so skip that date if you want quiet.
- Salto Suizo (full day). In Independencia, 38 km from Villarrica; the last 8 km from Melgarejo are dirt road (ABC Color, 2023 (opens in a new tab)), and the final 300 metres are on foot over streams and rocks (La Nación, 2020 (opens in a new tab)). Wear trainers, carry water and avoid it after heavy rain.
How to get to Villarrica
Villarrica is about 172 km from Asunción and has a bus terminal (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). By car, drive to Coronel Oviedo and then about 42 km south on Route PY08 (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). Leave Asunción early so the cool morning is still free for the park. If you stay for the evening and drink, do not drive: Paraguay has zero tolerance for alcohol at the wheel (ABC Color, 2021 (opens in a new tab)).
