In this guide
In Villarrica, from November to February the hours that matter are before 10:00 and after 17:00: that's when you walk, visit the park and run errands, and midday is spent indoors. September and October bring more rain and storms, while April to June is the most comfortable time to explore on foot, with cold mornings in winter.
When is it hottest in Villarrica?
Villarrica has a humid subtropical climate. In 2017, the local weather station recorded 37 °C in December and 19 days above 35 °C over the year; the all-time record is 40.4 °C, set in December 1985 (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). December is also the sunniest month, so the heat builds early.
What that means for you: in midsummer, skip long walks and shopping on foot between 10:00 and 17:00, the window Paraguay's Health Ministry and the IPS health service say to keep out of the sun (ABC Color, 2026 (opens in a new tab)).
A summer day, hour by hour
- 6:30 to 10:00: Parque Manuel Ortiz Guerrero and the Ykuá Pytã lagoon, with shade and capybaras; enter on Dr. Bottrel street (ABC Color, 2026 (opens in a new tab)). Also the time for the market and errands.
- 10:00 to 13:00: something indoors and close by: the Museo Fermín López behind the cathedral (ABC Color, 2026 (opens in a new tab)) or the Casa Cultural Ayala Talavera on General Díaz (Última Hora (opens in a new tab)).
- 13:00 to 17:00: lunch and siesta. If you must move, keep it to a short taxi hop.
- From 17:00: Barrio Estación, the murals and the plazas, with a round of tereré.

Spring: rain, wind and storms
September and October are the wettest months, September the windiest; the town gets about 97 rainy days a year, and storms flood homes in low-lying areas (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). In this season:
- Always have a covered plan for the afternoon.
- After a storm, don't wade through flooded streets; wait for the water to drain.
- For trips out, Itapé has a paved approach of about 23 km via Loma Hovy, the one to use after rain (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). Salto Suizo, by contrast, has 8 km of dirt road from Melgarejo (ABC Color, 2023 (opens in a new tab)); after heavy rain, leave it for another day.
Autumn and winter: the best time to walk
April and June are the driest months. Winter nights get properly cold: in 2017 there were 11 days below 5 °C, the record low is -3 °C (July 2000), and frost forms around dawn (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). This is the season to stretch your park visit to lunchtime and do the downtown loop in one go, but dress warmly early and bring an extra layer for the evening.
Festivals by season
- February, Carnaval Guaireño: in 2026 it ran over four nights, 20, 21, 27 and 28 February, at the Sambódromo Rey Eduardo Vezzetti (Última Hora (opens in a new tab)). It's at night, so daytime heat matters less; keep drinking water anyway.
- May: the 14th is the city's anniversary, and the Espíritu Santo patron-saint festival is held in Parque Ortiz Guerrero (ABC Color, 2026 (opens in a new tab)). Pleasant weather for being outdoors.
- June, San Juan: at the old railway station; in 2025 it started at 18:00 with free entry (ABC Color, 2025 (opens in a new tab)). Cool night: bring a jacket.
- October, Festival de la Raza: in 2025 it had nights from 10 to 24 October, with the big night at Club Cerro Corá (Hoy, 2025 (opens in a new tab)). It's rainy season, so check the forecast.
- December and January: Itapé's Playa Ysoró on the Tebicuarymí river fills up in the heat (ABC Color, 2026 (opens in a new tab)). On 18 December, the Virgen del Paso festival, more than 60,000 people come to Itapé (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)).
Staying safe in the heat
- Water all day: drink before you're thirsty; during heatwaves the IPS suggests 3 to 4 litres a day (ABC Color, 2026 (opens in a new tab)).
- Clothing: light, pale and loose, and cover your head with a hat, cap or umbrella (ABC Color, 2022 (opens in a new tab)).
- Warning signs: dizziness, nausea or feeling unwell. Get somewhere cool, drink and wet your skin (ABC Color, 2022 (opens in a new tab)). If it doesn't pass, go to an emergency room; options are in clinics and health basics in Villarrica.
- Children and older people: they're most at risk. Never leave a child or a pet in a parked car.
