In this guide
In Villarrica nearly everything is booked over WhatsApp: hotels, guided tours and the parks in the Independencia hills. Send a short message well ahead with dates, group size and what you need; get the total price, address and payment method in writing; never send a deposit until you know who you're paying; and reconfirm the day before.
What to book ahead
- Weekend accommodation. The owner of Mburucuyá Hotel Boutique, one of the town's hotels named by ABC Color (opens in a new tab), advised booking about eight days ahead for weekends (Infonegocios, 2020 (opens in a new tab)). At Easter many people come home to Villarrica: in 2026 the town hall welcomed travellers at the bus terminal with chipa and music (Última Hora, 2026 (opens in a new tab)). The city's anniversary on 14 May (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)) also fills rooms.
- Independencia on festival dates. Around Chopp Fest in early November and other festive dates, occupancy reaches 90-100% (La Nación, 2024 (opens in a new tab)).
- Guided tours. In 2023, the Guairá regional office of Senatur, the national tourism ministry, offered guided tours from G. 200,000, to be booked in advance (ABC Color, 2023 (opens in a new tab)).
- Anything that depends on the road. Before driving up Cerro Akatí, call the caretaker (+595 982 379 706) to ask about the dirt road (ABC Color, 2021 (opens in a new tab); Trip.com (opens in a new tab)). For Castillo Echauri, check visiting days on its Instagram, @castillo_echauri (La Nación, 2021 (opens in a new tab); Infonegocios, 2021 (opens in a new tab)).

How to write a message that gets a fast reply
One complete message saves three rounds of back-and-forth. Spanish works best, for example: "Hola, buenas. ¿Tienen habitación para 2 personas del viernes 14 al domingo 16? ¿Cuál es el precio total con desayuno? ¿Hay estacionamiento? ¿Cómo se paga y cuánto es la seña?" (room for two, Friday to Sunday, total with breakfast, parking, payment and deposit). Also ask:
- Whether the rate is per person or per room; both are common in Paraguay.
- The exact address, with a location pin shared in the chat.
- Whether they take QR, cards, or only bank transfer and cash. QR is now 68.1% of electronic payments in Paraguay (ABC Color, 2026 (opens in a new tab)), but not every place outside Asunción has it.
- The cancellation deadline and whether the deposit is refundable.
Screenshot the reply with the price: if it changes later, you have proof.
Deposits and transfers: how to avoid scams
SPI bank transfers arrive instantly, 24/7, for amounts up to G. 10,000,000 (BCP (opens in a new tab)). That's convenient, and it's also what scammers rely on. Before you pay:
- Check who's getting the money. The account should be in the name of the business or its owner. Paraguayan police advise against transferring to people you can't identify (Última Hora (opens in a new tab)).
- Distrust bargains and "last rooms". Asatur, the travel agency association, has warned about photos of other people's properties, prices far below average and the same place rented to several people for the same dates (La Nación, 2022 (opens in a new tab)).
- Ask for an invoice (factura). It's mandatory for every sale of goods and services (ABC Color (opens in a new tab)), and with the contract or chat history it backs any complaint to Sedeco, the consumer protection office (La Nación, 2022 (opens in a new tab)).
- Protect your WhatsApp. Turn on two-step verification (Settings > Account) and never pass on an SMS code, even if "the hotel" asks for it (Última Hora (opens in a new tab)).
The day before: reconfirm
- Send a short note: "Confirmo la llegada mañana a las 15:00, ¿todo en orden?" (confirming arrival tomorrow at 15:00).
- Heading into the hills? Ask whether it has rained: the roads to Salto Suizo and Cerro Akatí are unpaved.
- Arriving late? Give your arrival time and ask whether someone will be there to let you in.
What if nobody answers?
- Phone during business hours.
- Don't drive to an isolated place on an unconfirmed booking.
- Food needs no booking: Boulevard Vicente Mario has more than 50 outlets (Infonegocios, 2025 (opens in a new tab)). And Parque Manuel Ortiz Guerrero, around the Ykuá Pytã lagoon, is free and needs no reservation (ABC Color, 2026 (opens in a new tab)).
