Shopping and errands in Villarrica: three short loops

In Villarrica, errands fit into three short loops around the centre: Mercado Nº 1 first thing for fresh food, the plazas and town hall for paperwork, and the supermarket last, on your bank's discount day. Start early and group stops by area, and you'll be done before the heat peaks without crossing town twice.

Loop 1: Mercado Nº 1 and the terminal, first thing

Mercado Municipal Nº 1 sits downtown next to the bus terminal, with around 375 stalls selling vegetables, cassava, meat, cooked food and clothes (ABC Color, 2022 (opens in a new tab); ABC Color, 2025 (opens in a new tab)). It gets crowded and stalls spill onto the pavement, so:

  • Go before 9:00, when there's more choice and fewer people.
  • Bring your own bags and cash in small notes.
  • If you need to send or collect a parcel by bus, the terminal is right there.

On market days, add the Feria Amistad: Guairá farmers sell in Plaza Libertad, and the association behind it is there two days a week (ABC Color, 2025 (opens in a new tab)). Ask the stallholders which days they come and buy seasonal produce there.

Loop 2: paperwork around the plazas

The administrative centre is walkable: Plaza de los Héroes faces the town hall and Plaza de la Libertad sits beside the cathedral (Última Hora (opens in a new tab)).

  • Town hall (Municipalidad): local fees, property tax and the traffic department. Note on driving licences: in August 2026 the traffic department suspended issuing licences and vehicle permits for lack of supplies, with no restart date (ABC Color, 2026 (opens in a new tab)). Call before you go.
  • Civil registry: since November 2024 there has been a Registro Civil office inside Villarrica's Palacio de Justicia (Judiciary, 2024 (opens in a new tab)). Bring your ID and copies.
  • Banks: they serve customers on weekday mornings, so fit them into this loop, not the afternoon. More in cash, banks and payments in Villarrica.

Tip: do anything involving a counter first thing. If one office has a long queue, move on to another nearby and come back.

Loop 3: the supermarket, last

Villarrica has around a dozen supermarkets plus corner shops and neighbourhood stores (Infonegocios, 2025 (opens in a new tab)). To make the big shop count:

What time should you run errands?

On hot days, Paraguay's Health Ministry and the IPS health service advise avoiding the sun from 10:00 to 17:00 (ABC Color, 2026 (opens in a new tab)). So:

  • Early: market, farmers' fair and counters.
  • Midday: an air-conditioned supermarket or home.
  • After 17:00: whatever is left on foot.

September and October are the wettest months and storms flood low-lying areas (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)); if you live in one, shop before the storm.
