To eat well in Asunción, pick the neighbourhood first: the historic centre has the classic bar-restaurants serving Paraguayan food, Las Mercedes has old family houses along Avenida España, and Villa Morra is where the chef-driven dinner places are, best booked ahead. Once you know the area, the rest is opening days, booking and how you'll pay.
Where to try classic Paraguayan food downtown
The microcentro works best by day and on weekdays, when offices and government buildings keep it busy.
- Lido Bar. Open since 1953 in the historic centre, it is where visitors go for fish soup, vori vori, chipa guasu and sopa paraguaya (Infonegocios, 2026 (opens in a new tab)). It serves breakfast and takes cards, according to its Visit Paraguay (opens in a new tab) listing. There has also been a Villa Morra branch since 2015.
- El Bolsi. On Estrella and Alberdi since 1960, it is on TasteAtlas's list of legendary restaurants (ABC Color, 2023 (opens in a new tab)). In 2023 it opened 07:00 to 01:00 and took bookings Thursday to Sunday (La Nación, 2023 (opens in a new tab)), so it works for a late lunch or a late dinner.
- Bar Nacional. Facing the Panteón de los Héroes, seating about 200, with dishes like empanada de vacío and surubí soup (Infonegocios (opens in a new tab)). Its listing gives 07:00 to 01:00 Monday to Wednesday and until 02:00 Thursday to Saturday (Visit Paraguay (opens in a new tab)).
- Bar San Roque. At Eligio Ayala and Tacuary, open since the turn of the 20th century (ABC Color (opens in a new tab)), with Paraguayan and German dishes (Visit Paraguay (opens in a new tab)).
For something cheaper and quicker, the food stalls at Mercado 4 (opens in a new tab) in barrio Pettirossi feed the people who work around the market. Go at lunchtime with small cash and keep your phone close in the aisles.
Las Mercedes: classic houses on Avenida España
- Bar San Miguel. At Avenida España 1165, it opened in 1886 as "Recreo San Miguel" and bills itself as the oldest restaurant in the country (Visit Paraguay (opens in a new tab)). La Nación singles out its milanesas (La Nación, 2026 (opens in a new tab)).
- El Legado. From the same group, on Padre Cardozo near España, with grilled meat, seafood and a cocktail bar, in the house where Perón lived during his exile; it opened in December 2024 (La Nación (opens in a new tab); Visit Paraguay (opens in a new tab)).
Senatur and the Paraguayan restaurant association run a food tour of the neighbourhood on the last Thursday of each month, leaving from the Senatur office on Calle Palma, at G. 275,000. According to La Nación the remaining 2026 dates were 29 October and 26 November, booked through Touring Club (La Nación (opens in a new tab)).
Keep in mind Las Mercedes is a residential zone. In May 2026 the city council approved closing food businesses operating there without a permit (Última Hora (opens in a new tab)). It's a place for a relaxed dinner, not a loud late night.
Villa Morra: chef-driven dinners, booking needed
- Pakuri. At Eusebio Lillo 902 and Infante Rivarola, built from shipping containers, serving contemporary Paraguayan food. 50 Best Discovery (opens in a new tab) lists dinner Tuesday to Saturday and lunch Saturday and Sunday, averaging US$25 a person; The New York Times included it in its 36 Hours in Asunción (Infobae, 2024 (opens in a new tab)).
- Tierra Colorada Gastró. On Avenida Santísima Trinidad, cooking around cassava, beef and river fish. It was the first Paraguayan restaurant on Latin America's 50 Best (Infonegocios (opens in a new tab)); 50 Best Discovery (opens in a new tab) lists dinner Monday to Saturday, around US$41 a person.

What to check before you go
- Day and service. Several chef-led restaurants are closed Sunday night and Monday. Check their social media the same day.
- Booking. For Friday or Saturday dinner in Villa Morra, send the day, time and number of people by WhatsApp or social media, and wait for confirmation.
- Getting there. From downtown to Villa Morra you cross half the city on Mariscal López or España; allow extra time at evening rush hour. Coming back, a ride-hailing app saves the parking hunt.
- Patio or indoors. November to March is very hot; if you want the patio, ask when booking and check there is cover in case of a storm.
How people pay
In April 2026, 7 out of 10 electronic payments processed by Bancard were made by QR code (ABC Color (opens in a new tab)), and restaurants use it heavily. Foreign cards work in most sit-down places, but keep some guaraníes in cash for the market and small spots, and ask for a factura (receipt) if you need one for expenses.
