Plaza and downtown walking in Villarrica: shade, timing, and short loops

Squares, the cathedral, the Fermín López museum, Parque Ortiz Guerrero and the station murals: how to walk downtown Villarrica without wilting.

To walk downtown Villarrica, head out before 10:00 or after 17:00 and split it into two short loops: one through the squares and public buildings (Plaza de los Héroes, Plaza Libertad, the cultural house and the Teatro Municipal), and one through the cathedral, the Fermín López museum and the shade of Parque Manuel Ortiz Guerrero. Save the old railway district, barrio Estación, for late afternoon.

When is it cool enough to walk?

Summer in Villarrica is hot: in December 2017 the high reached 37 °C, and the city record is 40.4 °C (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). For outdoor activity in summer, Paraguay's Health Ministry advises going out before 10:00 or after 17:00, drinking water before you feel thirsty and wearing light-coloured clothes (MSPBS (opens in a new tab)).

  • November to February: squares first thing, museum or something indoors at midday, barrio Estación as the sun drops.
  • September and October: the wettest months (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). Carry an umbrella and know where you can duck inside.
  • April to June: the driest months, comfortable for walking most of the day.

Loop 1: squares and civic buildings

The morning route, with short stops:

Loop 2: cathedral, museum and a shady park

  • Catedral del Espíritu Santo. One of the seven historic churches on the city's religious circuit (ABC Color, 2026 (opens in a new tab)).
  • Museo Municipal Maestro Fermín López. Behind the cathedral in an 1842 house, with a room on poet Manuel Ortiz Guerrero: manuscripts, portraits and letters (ABC Color, 2026 (opens in a new tab)). It fits neatly into the hottest hour.
  • Parque Manuel Ortiz Guerrero. The big park, bounded by Bottrell and Coronel Oviedo streets (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). Enter on Dr. Bottrel from Mayor Bullo or Azara; the park wraps around the Ykuá Pytã lagoon, home to capybaras, ducks and birds you can feed (ABC Color, 2026 (opens in a new tab)). Inside are the Fuente de los Enamorados and the monument holding the poet's remains. This is the leafiest part of the walk.

Late afternoon: barrio Estación and the murals

The old railway station, built in 1888, stands in barrio Estación (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). Trains no longer run, but it's one of the most photographed buildings in town, and close by is a 1940s silo covered in murals and protected as heritage (ABC Color, 2026 (opens in a new tab)). The mural walk includes portraits of Manuel Ortiz Guerrero and of Chiquitunga, the Paraguayan beata born here (La Nación, 2024 (opens in a new tab)), and the urban circuit continues to Paseo Manú and the Chiquitunga gardens.

Are there guided walks?

  • Municipal city tour. The town hall's tourism office runs a tour of the municipal building, the theatre, a museum, parks and squares, plus a circuit called Los Jazmines de Chiquitunga through places linked to her life (La Nación, 2024 (opens in a new tab)). Message the municipality on its social pages for dates.
  • Circuito de Fe. A tour of the city's seven parishes: Nuestra Señora de la Asunción (in Ybaroty), San Miguel Arcángel, Santa Lucía, the cathedral, Santa Librada, Sagrado Corazón de Jesús and Virgen de Fátima. In 2023 the regional office of Senatur, the national tourism ministry, ran it free on Holy Wednesday with prior sign-up, and as a guided visit on other days from G. 200,000, booked ahead (ABC Color, 2023 (opens in a new tab)). The parishes are spread across several barrios, so this one is done by vehicle, not on foot.

Where to stop for food or a break

  • Boulevard Vicente Mario: more than 50 food outlets, from burgers to Chinese (Infonegocios, 2025 (opens in a new tab)). Handy for lunch between loops.
  • In your bag: water (or a tereré flask, like locals), a hat and sunscreen. Some downtown pavements have no shade, so walk on the side the buildings cover.

With a full day, see our short-visit guide to Villarrica; travelling with kids, try the hour-by-hour family day.
