Jesús de Tavarangüé is the Jesuit church that was left unfinished when the Jesuits were expelled in 1767, and you get in on the same 72-hour ticket as Trinidad. It sits about 12 km from Trinidad and about 40 km from Encarnación via Route PY06, so the easy plan is to leave Encarnación in the morning, see Jesús first and finish the day at Trinidad.
What makes the unfinished church worth the trip?
The mission was founded in 1685 and reached this site in 1760 after several moves (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). Here the Jesuits began one of the largest churches of its time, with a 70 by 24 metre central structure, and work stopped in 1767 (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). So what you see is not a collapsed building but walls that never got a roof.
- The arches. Look at the trefoil arches over the doorways, a Moorish touch that sets Jesús apart from the other missions (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)).
- World Heritage. Jesús and Trinidad have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1993 (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)).
- Tip: walk the outside of the nave first to take in the scale, then go in; the arches photograph best when the sun is low.
How do you get there from Encarnación?
- By car: take Route PY06 north. About 100 m from the Trinidad entrance, at around km 31, a paved road branches off to Jesús (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). Trinidad is about 30 km from downtown Encarnación and Jesús is 12 km beyond it (ABC Color, 2023 (opens in a new tab)).
- By bus: buses from Encarnación towards Ciudad del Este pass Trinidad; in May 2023 Wikivoyage listed about 45 minutes and G. 15,000 (Wikivoyage (opens in a new tab)).
- Trinidad to Jesús without a car: the same guide says a small bus leaves roughly hourly from the service station by the Trinidad turn-off for G. 4,000, or you can take a moto-taxi, listed at G. 30,000 for up to four people (Wikivoyage (opens in a new tab)). Walking takes about two hours, which is a bad idea in the heat.
- Tip: ask at the stop when the last bus back leaves before you go in.
Tickets: price and what they cover
- One ticket, three missions. It is valid for 72 hours at Trinidad, Jesús and San Cosme y Damián; bring ID (ABC Color, 2023 (opens in a new tab)).
- Price. In April 2026 it cost G. 40,000 for foreigners, G. 25,000 for Paraguayans and G. 12,500 for Paraguayans aged 66+, with children up to 12 free (La Nación, 2026 (opens in a new tab)). These are the same rates ABC reported in January 2025 for the ticket bought at San Cosme (ABC Color, 2025 (opens in a new tab)). Bring cash in case it has changed.
- Keep the ticket if you plan to see Trinidad or San Cosme the next day.

At Trinidad, the site opens at 7:00 and closes at 19:00 in summer and between 17:00 and 17:30 in winter; the light-and-sound night tour runs Wednesday to Sunday, at 19:00 in winter and 21:00 in summer (Pilgrimaps (opens in a new tab); Wikivoyage (opens in a new tab)). If you are not staying for the evening, flip the order and end at Jesús.
Heat, food and what to bring
- Sun. There is almost no shade inside the nave. In summer Paraguay's Health Ministry advises outdoor activity before 10:00 or after 17:00 (MSPBS (opens in a new tab)).
- Food. Wikivoyage lists nowhere to eat at Jesús and suggests bringing lunch (Wikivoyage (opens in a new tab)). Pack water and snacks in Encarnación.
- Shoes. Wear closed shoes: the grass and stone are uneven.
