To pick a hotel in Encarnación, start with the area that fits your trip: near the Costanera and Playa San José for the beach or Carnival, downtown for business or shopping, and somewhere with its own parking if you will drive out to the Trinidad ruins. For January, February and Easter, book early: the city has about 5,000 beds and expects tens of thousands of summer visitors.

Which part of Encarnación should you stay in?

  • Costanera and Playa San José. Costanera República del Paraguay runs 8.7 km facing Posadas, with Playa San José and the Paseo Gastronómico (Municipality (opens in a new tab); Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). Stay here to walk to the beach and dinner without a car. The trade-off: summer and Carnival nights are lively, so ask for a room away from the avenue if sleep matters.
  • Downtown and Plaza de Armas. A few blocks from the river, with taxi ranks near the plaza and the bus terminal (Wikivoyage (opens in a new tab)). Good for work trips, shopping or family visits.
  • Avenida Irrazábal. One of the two routes the municipality gives from the international bridge to the riverfront; the Casino Carnaval and its hotel are on it, for example (Infonegocios (opens in a new tab)). From the bridge to Playa San José is about 6.1 km, roughly 15 minutes by car (Municipality (opens in a new tab)).
  • If you're here for the missions. Trinidad is about 30 km from downtown on route PY06, and the ticket is valid for 72 hours for both day and night visits (ABC Color, 2023 (opens in a new tab)). If you want the night show, plan a late drive back or look for lodging near the ruins.

When do you need to book well ahead?

Hotel or an apartment from an app?

Holiday homes and apartments rented out as a business through Airbnb, Facebook or Instagram must register with SENATUR's national tourism register (Registur) under Tourism Law 2828/05 (La Nación, 2024 (opens in a new tab)). Before you transfer a deposit, look the place up on registur.gov.py (opens in a new tab); SENATUR answers questions at registur@senatur.gov.py (ABC Color, 2024 (opens in a new tab)).

What to ask before you pay a deposit

Send one message covering all of this and keep the reply:

  • Air conditioning in the room: in summer you will use it every night.
  • Parking on site, and whether it is covered, especially if you are driving to the missions.
  • Which way the room faces: avenue, riverfront or inner courtyard.
  • Check-in times and late arrival, if you are crossing from Posadas or arriving after a long trip.
  • Breakfast included or not.
  • Cancellation and deposit: how much is refunded and until when, in writing.
  • Payment: card, bank transfer or QR, and whether they issue a tax invoice (factura).
