In Encarnación, the city's sights (the Costanera, Playa San José, Plaza de Armas, the San Pedro staircase and the museums) are easy to see on your own and on foot; a guide or agency only really adds value for the Jesuit ruins at Trinidad and Jesús, about 30 km away. If you do book an agency, first check it is licensed on SENATUR's Registur. Below: what to see, opening hours and how to get to each place.

  • For the missions, it depends. You can take a regular bus and join the guided tour at the ruins, or book a day trip that covers Trinidad and Jesús.

  • Plaza de Armas. Bounded by Mcal. Estigarribia, 14 de Mayo and Tomás Romero Pereira, with a Japanese garden and a curupay tree of about 220 years declared a natural monument (Municipality (opens in a new tab); Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). Nearby is the Orthodox church of St Nicholas, with Cyrillic inscriptions (Wikivoyage (opens in a new tab)).
