In this guide
Encarnación is not a day trip from Asunción: the bus takes about 7 hours each way (Wikivoyage (opens in a new tab)), so plan at least one night. The day-trip idea works the other way round: base yourself in Encarnación and go out to the Jesuit ruins at Trinidad and Jesús, to Hohenau or to Posadas, then sleep back in town. Here is how to set the trip up without wasting time.
Can you do it there and back in a day from Asunción?
No. It is about 7 hours by bus each way; in May 2023 tickets cost Gs. 70,000 to 120,000, and the bus passes San Ignacio Guazú after 3 hours (Wikivoyage (opens in a new tab)). Buy at the official terminal counters, not from people outside offering tickets, who have sold overpriced or non-existent ones (Wikivoyage (opens in a new tab)). The practical move is to leave Friday afternoon or night and have all of Saturday and Sunday.
When is the best time to go?
- Beach season: from the second half of October until after Easter, with lifeguards at Playa San José from 08:00 to 20:00 (Municipalidad de Encarnación (opens in a new tab)).
- Carnival: Saturdays in January and February; in 2026 there were five nights between 17 January and 14 February, with tickets from Gs. 30,000 per person up to Gs. 1,500,000 per table (Última Hora (opens in a new tab)).
- Peak weekends: in summer 2025 hotels passed 95% occupancy (ABC Color (opens in a new tab)). If your dates hit carnival or a long weekend, book the room before the bus.
- Weather: January averages highs of 33 °C, July 22 °C with lows of 10 °C, and October is the wettest month (Wikivoyage (opens in a new tab)). For walking the ruins, autumn and winter are more comfortable.
In summer, do anything in the sun before 10:00 or after 17:00 and drink water even when you are not thirsty (MSPBS (opens in a new tab)).
Day trips from an Encarnación base
Trinidad ruins. A World Heritage site on Ruta PY06. Take a bus towards Ciudad del Este, get off at Trinidad and walk about 500 m; it takes around 45 minutes (Wikivoyage (opens in a new tab)). In April 2026 entry was Gs. 25,000 for Paraguayans and Gs. 40,000 for foreigners (La Nación (opens in a new tab)); the ticket is valid for 72 hours, covers Jesús and San Cosme y Damián, and includes both the daytime visit and the night light-and-sound tour (ABC Color, 2023 (opens in a new tab)). Tip: arrive mid-afternoon, walk the site in daylight and stay for the night tour.
Jesús de Tavarangüé ruins. About 12 km from Trinidad (ABC Color, 2023 (opens in a new tab)). Without a car, take a moto-taxi or the small local bus that leaves roughly hourly from the petrol station on the highway (Wikivoyage (opens in a new tab)). Pair it with Trinidad on the same day.
Hohenau and the colonies. Hohenau is at km 35 of the PY06 (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)): a museum, a park with pools and sunset at the port on the Paraná. The full plan is in our Hohenau day trip.
Posadas, across the river. A train crosses the bridge in just over ten minutes, every half hour during the day, and white "Internacional" buses stop at both passport offices; if you are slow at immigration, keep your ticket stub and catch the next one (Wikivoyage (opens in a new tab)). Bring your ID or passport. The train has been suspended at times in past years, so check the operator's social media before you go.
Watch the bridge on the way back
Itapúa handled about 59% of all entries into Paraguay between January and May 2026 (ABC Color (opens in a new tab)), nearly all over the San Roque González bridge. At Easter 2024 the wait to come back was over two hours (ABC Color (opens in a new tab)). If you cross to Posadas on a long weekend, return early and don't leave it for your last day.
Getting around and paying in town
- On foot and by bus: the centre is walkable; local buses run every 15 to 40 minutes, cost Gs. 5,000, and it is worth confirming the route with the driver (Wikivoyage (opens in a new tab)).
- Taxi and apps: taxi stands sit near the plaza and the bus station (Wikivoyage (opens in a new tab)), and Uber operates in the city, including Uber Moto (Última Hora (opens in a new tab)).
- Costanera: 8.7 km along the Paraná (Municipalidad de Encarnación (opens in a new tab)); walk it at sunset and add the Railway Museum facing Playa San José, open weekends from 13:00 to 17:00 (Municipalidad de Encarnación (opens in a new tab)).
- Money: where and how to change cash is in our currency exchange in Encarnación guide.
What to see in town is in things to do in Encarnación; where to sleep, in hotels in Encarnación.
