To pick a restaurant in Encarnación, start with the area: the Costanera and the Paseo Gastronómico if you want dinner by the Paraná, or the microcentro if you want somewhere quieter near the museums (ABC Color, 2024 (opens in a new tab)). Then filter by type of food in the city council's food listing (opens in a new tab), which gives each place's address, phone and social links, and message ahead to check opening hours, which the listing does not publish.
Costanera, Paseo Gastronómico or downtown?
- Paseo Gastronómico: at the junction of Avenida República del Paraguay and Avenida Gaspar Rodríguez de Francia, with a wide choice of dishes aimed at visitors (ABC Color, 2024 (opens in a new tab)), open every night (ABC Color, January 2024 (opens in a new tab)). The easy option when some of your group want a full meal and others just a snack.
- Costanera and Playa San José: the riverside promenade runs 8.7 km with food stalls (city council (opens in a new tab)), and the council listing has its own category for the Playa San José beach stop. Best at sunset, busiest in summer.
- Downtown (microcentro): varied options a few blocks from the beach and the museums (ABC Color, 2024 (opens in a new tab)). Good for a weekday lunch or a long dinner away from the waterfront noise.
What kind of food are you after?
The council listing (opens in a new tab) groups places like this, which saves time:
- Buffet and à la carte restaurants: weekday lunch or a sit-down dinner.
- Fast food: pizza, lomitos (steak sandwiches), burgers, empanadas and sandwiches, grills and rotisserie chicken.
- International cuisine: when the group wants something different.
- Vegetarian and vegan: it has its own category, but very few places; ask any restaurant about meat-free dishes before you go.
- Chipa shops, ice cream parlours and bars: for breakfast, a beach afternoon or after dinner.
Each entry has a map location and a link to Instagram or Facebook: check recent menu photos on social media and message to ask what time the kitchen closes that day.
When should you book?
- Beach season: from the second half of October until after Easter (city council (opens in a new tab)). On high-season weekends the central beach draws 25,000 to 30,000 people (ABC Color, 2024 (opens in a new tab)), and restaurants near the Costanera fill up.
- Carnival Saturdays: in 2026 there were five nights between 17 January and 14 February (Última Hora, 2026 (opens in a new tab)). On those nights book early or eat before the parade.
- Visitors from Posadas: the train from Posadas runs about every 30 minutes and takes just over ten minutes (Wikivoyage (opens in a new tab)), so Argentine public holidays fill the city too.
On weekdays and outside the season, walking in usually works.
How to pay and what to check on the menu
- QR first: QR is the dominant digital payment in Paraguay (InfoNegocios (opens in a new tab)); carry a card and some cash too.
- Prices in guaraníes: consumer law requires prices in local currency with taxes included (Law 1334, art. 10 (opens in a new tab)). If you are quoted in pesos or reais, ask for the guaraní total and compare the rate.
- Alcohol and minors: selling or serving alcohol to under-20s in public venues is prohibited (Law 1642 (opens in a new tab)).
With children or a big group?
For families, the Costanera and Playa San José give kids room to move while you wait for food. For groups of more than six, message ahead to ask if they can join tables and whether there is a cover or service charge.
Getting back after dinner
Uber operates in Encarnación with UberX, Uber Flash and Uber Moto (Última Hora (opens in a new tab)). If you have been drinking, do not drive: the Patrulla Caminera enforces zero tolerance (ABC Color, 2021 (opens in a new tab)).
