In Ciudad del Este, a "librería" is mainly the place for school supplies, office stationery, photocopies and printing; if you want novels or textbooks, ask first because not every shop carries them. To find the most convenient one, choose by area (the microcentro, Área 1, along Ruta PY02 or near the UNE campus at Km 8), and avoid the weeks right before school starts if you do not want to queue.
What does a librería in CDE sell?
In Paraguay, "librería" means a stationery and school-supply shop, not just a bookstore. Typically you will find:
- School supplies: notebooks, folders, pencils, backpacks and everything on the school list.
- Office stationery: paper reams, envelopes, binders, ink and toner.
- Services: photocopies, printing, spiral binding, laminating and, in some, scanning.
- Books: some sell textbooks or fiction, but the range varies a lot. If you need a specific title, message them before going.
Where should you look, by area?
- Microcentro: the area sloping down from Avenida Bernardino Caballero to the port on the Paraná River (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). It is packed with shops and people, so parking is hard; go on foot or by bus, and early.
- Ruta PY02 corridor: the city is navigated by kilometer markers (Km 4, 5½, 7, 8, 10). Avenida San Blas and Avenida Monseñor Rodríguez run as service roads on each side of the highway, which makes stopping by car easier.
- Área 1 and Boquerón: residential areas close to downtown, handy if you live there and want to skip the microcentro.
- Near the UNE: the main campus of the Universidad Nacional del Este is at Campus Km 8 Acaray, barrio San Juan, home to the Polytechnic, Economics, Philosophy and Law faculties (UNE (opens in a new tab)). If you study there, look for copies and printing around campus before heading downtown.
For the "nearest librería", check the map and call first: hours differ on weekdays, Saturdays and holidays.
When is the best time to buy school supplies?
The weeks before classes start are the busiest. In 2026 most private schools started on February 9 and public schools on February 23 (La Nación (opens in a new tab)). If you can, shop in January or in the first week of February.
Before you go shopping with the list, check what your child gets at school: the Ministry of Education hands out supply kits across the country at the start of the year, so you avoid buying items twice.
How do you compare prices on a school list?
- Ask for a quote on the full list: many shops will price it if you send a photo of the list on WhatsApp. Compare two or three.
- Ask about alternative brands: if the school does not require a brand, notebooks and colors can cost much less.
- Payment: ask whether they take cards, bank transfer or QR. If you want to pay in Brazilian reais or US dollars, ask what exchange rate they use before you reach the till.
- Pick-up or delivery: some shops prepare the order so you only collect it, which saves the wait in high season.
What should you know about copies and printing?
- Bring the file as a PDF on your phone or a USB stick to avoid formatting surprises.
- Ask the price per page in black and white and in color before printing a long document.
- Binding and laminating can take a while; if you need it the same day, say so early.
- In exam weeks the lines near faculties and schools grow, so print a day ahead.
Is a big stationery store worth the trip?
For a full school list or bulk office supplies, a large store on the highway usually has more stock and better volume prices. For copies, an envelope or a last-minute refill, the shop in your barrio saves time and traffic. Choose by what you need that day, not by the shop's reputation.
