In this guide
Shopping in Ciudad del Este falls into three routes: downtown on foot in the morning, the PY02 service roads by car, and the lake area for the afternoon and evening. Pick the route that fits what you are buying and how you travel, and make the same three checks at every stop: final price in your currency, a test of the product, and an invoice.
The map in two minutes
- Downtown (microcentro): right by the Friendship Bridge, from the Rotonda Oasis down to the port. From the Oasis up to km 4 the road climbs (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)), so plan to walk downhill and take a taxi back up.
- PY02 service roads: Avenida San Blas and Avenida Monseñor Rodríguez run either side of the highway, eight lanes in all over about 10 km (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). The big stores with parking sit along them.
- Lake area: around the Lago de la República, with a mall, cinema and food court that stay open into the night.
Route 1: downtown on foot (7:00 to 15:00)
Shops open between 6:00 and 7:00 and close between 15:00 and 16:00, and nearly all prices are in US dollars (ABC Color, 2021 (opens in a new tab)). Stops to compare:
- Cellshop, headquartered downtown, for electronics (ABC Color, 2026 (opens in a new tab); Infonegocios, 2025 (opens in a new tab)).
- Monalisa, an eight-storey building on Monseñor Rodríguez, for perfume, watches, jewellery and wine (La Nación, 2021 (opens in a new tab); Infonegocios (opens in a new tab)).
Between stores you will pass arcades and pavement stalls: the clothes, shoes and sunglasses on stalls are imitations (ABC Color, 2021 (opens in a new tab)). Cars and pedestrians share the streets (La Nación, 2026 (opens in a new tab)), so keep an eye out even on the pavement.
Route 2: service roads and the city entrance, by car
There is almost nowhere to park downtown (ABC Color, 2021 (opens in a new tab)). By car, build the day around stores with their own parking and use the service road for your direction:
- SAX, a department store on Avenida San Blas with its own restaurant for a lunch break (ABC Color, 2024 (opens in a new tab); Tripadvisor (opens in a new tab)). Fashion and brands.
- Shopping China, a nine-storey building with 33,000 m² of sales floor on three levels and space for over 1,000 vehicles (Prensa Mercosur, 2025 (opens in a new tab); Infonegocios, 2025 (opens in a new tab)). Everything under one roof.
- New Zone, in Shopping del Este, at the city entrance by customs, with parking; open Monday to Saturday 7:00–22:00 and Sunday 8:00–21:00 (H2FOZ, 2026 (opens in a new tab); Clickfoz, 2024 (opens in a new tab)). A good last stop before crossing.
Route 3: the lake area, afternoon and evening
Lago Shopping, at Monseñor Rodríguez and Concejal Romero, runs its food court Sunday to Friday 11:00–23:00 and Saturdays until midnight (official site (opens in a new tab)) and has a Cinemark (La Nación, 2022 (opens in a new tab)). For dinner afterwards, Avenida del Lago, Campo Vía and Rogelio Benítez are the restaurant and bar areas, close to one another (ABC Color, 2021 (opens in a new tab)).
Checks at every stop
- Final price in your currency. Law 1334 (opens in a new tab) requires prices to include taxes and be shown in legal tender (art. 10). Ask for the total in guaraníes, dollars or reais before you pay.
- Test at the counter. Switch it on, check accessories, brand and model (ABC Color, 2021 (opens in a new tab)).
- Invoice and warranty. Every sale needs an invoice (ABC Color (opens in a new tab)), and any warranty must be written, with its term and scope (art. 11 of Law 1334).
Buying wholesale
The city's Mercado de Abasto has more than 800 stalls selling fruit, vegetables and clothing (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). It is a separate outing: go early with small notes, and don't combine it with an electronics day.
