A weekend in Ciudad del Este works if you shop early on Saturday, spend midday indoors and save outdoor plans for the morning or late afternoon. Group outings by area (downtown, Hernandarias, Presidente Franco) so you never cross the city twice, and avoid heading back over the bridge at Sunday's peak.

Heat and traffic set the pace

Saturday: early shopping, indoor midday, the lake at sunset

Sunday: nature first thing

Pick one of these short loops, not both:

  • Presidente Franco. Monday Falls (Saltos del Monday) are 3 km from Franco's centre; according to Última Hora (2018) they opened daily from 7:00, until 15:30 in winter and 19:00 in summer (Última Hora (opens in a new tab)). Arrive at opening and be back before noon.
  • Hernandarias. It is 15 km away (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). Visit Itaipú in the morning with a booking, then the shaded trails of the Parque Lineal, which ABC (2022) listed as open 8:00–21:00. Itaipú's attractions close on 24, 25 and 31 December and 1 January (La Nación, 2025 (opens in a new tab)).

Can you shop on Sunday?

Yes, with shorter hours. In 2021 Monalisa opened 8:00–12:00 on Sundays (La Nación, 2021 (opens in a new tab); Infonegocios (opens in a new tab)), and New Zone opens 8:00–21:00. Leave any unfinished shopping for Sunday afternoon indoors, after your outing.
