In this guide
Buying tires in Paraguay pays off when the price gap still holds after you add the trip, the bridge queue and whatever you owe for going over your customs allowance. In Ciudad del Este and Encarnación, Chinese tires cost much less than big brands, but the maths moves with the exchange rate, so run it on the day, with your exact tire size.
How much cheaper is it, really?
The comparisons people share date from 2024, so treat them as a rough scale, not today's price. In May 2024 a Chinese 215/65 R16 cost about US$60 in Paraguay, a Firestone US$80 and a Bridgestone US$83, against far higher prices in Argentina (iProfesional, 2024 (opens in a new tab)). That February, a Bridgestone 225/65 R17 was listed at less than half the Argentine price in Ciudad del Este (iProfesional, 2024 (opens in a new tab)).
Exchange rates and prices on the other side have moved since. Before you go:
- Write down the full size printed on your current tire: width, profile, rim, load index and speed rating.
- Ask two Paraguayan shops for a quote on WhatsApp and compare with the same brand and size at home.
- Ask whether the price includes fitting, balancing and valves, or just the bare tire.
Chinese or premium: what you are paying for
Eight in ten tires sold in Paraguay are Chinese, according to the sales director of a tire distributor in Fernando de la Mora. He gives the spread too: about US$150 for a Chinese pickup tire against roughly US$450 for a Michelin or Pirelli, and he admits premium tires brake better and carry more engineering (Infonegocios, 2025 (opens in a new tab)). In Encarnación, the chamber of commerce says Chinese tires are what Argentine shoppers ask for most (Primera Edición, 2024 (opens in a new tab)).
Rule of thumb: for a city car a Chinese tire may be enough; if you drive long distances, carry loads or run a heavy pickup, price a known brand before deciding on cost alone.
What to check in the shop before paying
- Manufacturing date. The DOT code on the sidewall ends in four digits: week and year (1119 = week 11 of 2019). Pirelli notes that performance drops over time even if a tire is never used (Pirelli (opens in a new tab)). Ask for four tires from the same batch, as recent as possible.
- Load index and speed rating equal to or above what your vehicle requires.
- An invoice showing brand, size and quantity. You need it at customs and for any claim.
- A written warranty: ask who honours it and whether it is valid outside Paraguay.
How much can you take home tax-free?
- Argentina. The land allowance is US$300 per person, per month, and cannot be pooled; above it you pay 50% on the excess. Under-16s get half (La Nación Argentina, 2026 (opens in a new tab)). Four pickup tires easily go over, so add that 50% to your sums.
- Brazil. The land quota is US$500 every 30 days per person, and goods meant for resale do not count as baggage (Receita Federal (opens in a new tab)). Four tires for your own car is not the same as twenty to sell.
Skip the trick of dirtying new tires to pass them off as used: Misiones Online reports it as smuggling on the Posadas–Encarnación bridge (Misiones Online, 2023 (opens in a new tab)). Declaring and paying on the excess is almost always cheaper than losing all four.
Paying and planning the day
In Encarnación the chamber of commerce advises paying cash, in pesos or dollars, rather than with an Argentine credit card because of the rate and taxes (Primera Edición, 2024 (opens in a new tab)). Always ask for the final price in the currency you will pay with.
If you can, have the tires fitted and balanced in Paraguay and drive back on them: the car is ready and you are not hauling four tires in the boot. Keep the invoice in the glovebox until you are through customs.
The final sum
Add it up: four tires + fitting + fuel and tolls + hours in the bridge queue + 50% of the excess (Argentina) or duties (Brazil). If the total lands close to your local price, buy at home: you get a local warranty and nobody searches your boot.
FAQ
Is it worth buying tires in Paraguay?
Usually yes, if the gap survives the trip, fitting and any duty above your allowance. Get a quote for your exact size on the day and compare with home.
How many tires can I bring into Argentina duty-free?
There is no fixed number: the land allowance is US$300 per person per month, and you pay 50% on anything above it. Keep the invoice to declare.
How do I read a tire's manufacturing date?
Look at the last four digits of the DOT code on the sidewall: the first two are the week, the last two the year. 1119 means week 11 of 2019.
Are Chinese tires reliable?
They make up eight in ten tires sold in Paraguay. For city driving they may be enough; for frequent highway trips or loaded pickups, compare with an established brand.
