In Ciudad del Este, pick the store by what you are buying and how you are getting home. For electronics, perfume and imports, go to the big import houses downtown next to the Friendship Bridge; if you drive and want parking and a food court, use the newer malls; for household or bulk shopping, go to the Abasto market. Before you set off, sort out the logistics: which bridge you cross, how much you can take into Brazil and what paperwork the store must give you.
Which kind of store suits you?
- Big import houses downtown. The area between the Rotonda Oasis and kilometre 4 of Route PY02 concentrates the electronics, perfume and imported clothing that mostly draws shoppers from Brazil and Argentina (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab); La Nación, 2026 (opens in a new tab)). One example: Cellshop, headquartered downtown with more than 250,000 products (ABC Color, 2026 (opens in a new tab); InfoNegocios, 2025 (opens in a new tab)). Good if you want to compare several shops on foot within a few blocks; the streets slope down towards the port, so walking it is tiring.
- Malls with parking. If you drive, look for one with its own car park. The new Shopping China building, opened in December 2025, has nine floors, three sales levels and space for more than 1,000 vehicles (Prensa Mercosur, 2025 (opens in a new tab); InfoNegocios, 2025 (opens in a new tab)).
- Markets for the household. If you live in the area and want fruit, vegetables or bulk buys, Abasto Este in Minga Guazú (km 14.5) sells retail and wholesale: in 2025 the fresh-produce block opened 5:00 to 19:00 and the wholesale area and food court 7:00 to 22:00 (ABC Color, 2025 (opens in a new tab)).
How do you cross the bridge this year?
Crossing rules changed several times in 2026 as the new Puente de la Integración (Integration Bridge) between Presidente Franco and Foz do Iguaçu opened in stages:
- On a shopping tour bus: since 19 January 2026 tour buses can no longer use the Friendship Bridge; at that stage they had to cross the Integration Bridge between 19:00 and 7:00 (La Nación, 2026 (opens in a new tab)). Ask the organiser when you cross and where you are dropped off, because that decides how many real shopping hours you get.
- Border residents driving: from 14 September 2026, light vehicles of residents of Ciudad del Este, Presidente Franco, Hernandarias and Foz do Iguaçu may use the Integration Bridge from 7:00 to 13:00, carrying the border-resident transit document (Documento de Tránsito Vecinal Fronterizo) (Joint Commission, 2026 (opens in a new tab)).
- Check the current schedule before you leave: the bridge's full opening was still in progress.
How much can you take into Brazil?
Brazil's Receita Federal sets these rules for land arrivals (Receita Federal (opens in a new tab)):
- Allowance: US$500 per person, once every 30 days. It is individual and non-transferable: a family cannot pool allowances.
- Quantities: goods over US$5, up to 10 units with no more than 3 identical; goods under US$5, up to 20 units with no more than 10 identical; alcoholic drinks, 12 litres in total; cigarettes, 10 packs of 20.
- Personal use only: goods bought for resale do not count as baggage.
- Minors: may not carry alcohol or tobacco in their baggage, even with their parents.
Go over the limits and the goods lose their tax exemption. Choose stores that invoice each purchase properly and keep the invoices together for customs.
How do you know the store is legitimate?
- Invoice with a tax ID (RUC): every sale must come with an invoice (Sedeco via ABC Color (opens in a new tab)). With the RUC you can look up the taxpayer on the DNIT tax authority website without logging in (DNIT (opens in a new tab)), and DNIT also publishes a list of barred businesses (DNIT (opens in a new tab)).
- Price in guaraníes, taxes included: Law 1334 (opens in a new tab) requires it in legal tender (art. 10). Ask for the final price in the currency you will pay with.
- Written warranty: with its term and scope (art. 11 of Law 1334 (opens in a new tab)). Ask whether warranty claims go through the shop or only through the manufacturer in your country.
- Pix: since February 2024 merchants on the Bancard network can accept Pix if they have switched it on (InfoNegocios (opens in a new tab)). Ask before you queue at the till.
What if something goes wrong?
Complain at the shop first, invoice in hand. If they don't respond, the city council has a Consumer Protection Office: in February 2026 it worked with the 1st Police Station and the prosecutor's office to get two Brazilian shoppers their money back, and urged buyers to report problems straight away (Última Hora, 2026 (opens in a new tab)). Don't leave the city before you have filed the complaint; it is much harder afterwards.
