To choose a mechanic in Obligado, start with what your vehicle needs (service, brakes, suspension, air conditioning, electrics) and ask for a written diagnosis and quote before you authorise any work. Obligado sits on Ruta PY06 between Hohenau and Bella Vista, about 35 to 40 km from Encarnación (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab), La Nación (opens in a new tab)): everyday repairs can be handled locally in the Colonias Unidas, while Encarnación is the backup for dealer work or hard-to-find parts.

What kind of workshop do you need?

Before you call, note what the car is doing: a noise, a leak, a dashboard light, brakes pulling, AC not cooling. Then:

  • Servicing: a mechanic quoted by Infonegocios (April 2026) (opens in a new tab) recommends changing oil and filters every 10,000 km on new engines and every 5,000 km on used ones. That report put oil and filters at G. 350,000 to 450,000 plus labour on average (an Asunción workshop's figures; ask for yours).
  • Suspension and brakes: outside the town centre many rural roads are still dirt (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). If you drive to a farm often, ask them to check bushings, shocks and alignment and to show you worn parts.
  • Air filter: dirt roads mean more dust; ask whether it should be checked at every service.
  • Work pick-ups: the district's economy is farming, with soy, maize, wheat and yerba mate (La Nación (opens in a new tab)). For a diesel or a pick-up that hauls loads, look for a shop that works on that engine and has a scanner for your make.
  • Air conditioning: January and February highs reach about 38 °C (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). If it is not cooling, have them find the leak, not just recharge the gas.

Where to look: Obligado, the Colonias or Encarnación?

  • In and around Obligado: along PY06, Hohenau is at km 35, Obligado at km 38 and Bella Vista at km 48 (Wikipedia, Route 6 (opens in a new tab)). Search "taller mecánico" on your phone map and note two or three on your side of the road. For a service or a flat tyre, the nearest is usually the most practical.
  • In Encarnación: for an official dealer workshop, major bodywork or a part not available locally, ask price and timing on WhatsApp before driving the 35 to 40 km.
  • Before a long trip: Asunción is 414 km away (La Nación (opens in a new tab)). Get brakes, tyres and cooling checked a few days ahead, not the night before.

What to get before you authorise a repair

Paraguay's consumer law, Law 1334/98 (opens in a new tab), gives you concrete tools:

  • A clear quote: the shop must state how long the quote is valid, the materials and the warranty scope (art. 15), with prices including taxes (art. 10).
  • No surprises: any extra work or part not in the quote must be notified before it is done (art. 16).
  • Written warranty: if a warranty is offered it must be in writing, stating what it covers and for how long (art. 11).
  • Invoice: every sale of goods and services must be invoiced (Sedeco via ABC Color (opens in a new tab)).

Also ask whether parts are original or aftermarket, and to have replaced parts returned to you.

How to avoid being without a car for too long

  • Rain: annual rainfall is about 1,700 mm and October is the wettest month (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). Mud brings more suspension and brake work, so book ahead when you can.
  • Busy dates: in 2025 Obligado was on the World Rally Championship route, which the mayor said would bring about 250,000 people to the department, and the Chopp Fest takes place every November at the Club Alemán (La Nación (opens in a new tab)). Book earlier in those weeks.
  • Timing in writing: ask when the part arrives and when you get the vehicle back.
  • Payment: ask whether they take QR or bank transfer. QR is now 68.1% of electronic payments in Paraguay, according to Bancard (ABC Color, 2026 (opens in a new tab)).

If something goes wrong

Talk to the workshop first, with the invoice and quote in hand. If you cannot agree, file a complaint with the consumer protection office through sedeco.gov.py (opens in a new tab). Automotive was among the most complained-about sectors in the first half of 2026, at 6% (Hoy (opens in a new tab)), so keep photos, messages and paperwork from day one.

FAQ

How do I find an auto repair shop near me in Obligado?

Search "taller mecánico" on your phone map and note two or three along PY06 or near you. Send both the symptoms and choose the one that gives a written diagnosis and quote.

Should I take my car to Encarnación?

Not for a service or a common repair. For an official dealer workshop or a hard-to-find part, Encarnación is about 35 to 40 km away: check price and timing before you go.

Can a workshop charge for work not in the quote?

Under article 16 of Law 1334/98, any extra work or cost must be notified before it is done, unless stopping the work would harm you.

Where do I complain if a repair goes wrong?

First with the workshop, with invoice and quote. If that fails, file a complaint with Sedeco at sedeco.gov.py.
