Bookstores in Obligado: school supplies, copies and books

Choosing a bookstore in Obligado: supplies and copies, the MEC school kit, when to shop and where to find books nearby.

In Obligado, the right bookstore depends on what you need: for school supplies, stationery and photocopies, one in the centre or your neighbourhood is enough; for a specific book, order it or look in Encarnación, about 40 km away. Before you go, send the list or title by WhatsApp and ask for price and stock, so you can compare two or three shops without visiting them all.

Bookshop, stationer or both?

In Paraguay a "librería" can be a bookshop or a shop selling school supplies, notebooks and office goods, and many also do photocopies, printing and binding. Be clear about what you need:

  • School supplies and stationery: notebooks, folders, card, backpacks. The easiest thing to find in town.
  • Copies and printing: ask the price per page, whether they print in colour and when it will be ready.
  • Books: school reading, textbooks and new releases. If it is not in stock, ask whether they can order it, how long it takes and whether they want a deposit.

Before buying the list: check the MEC kit

Public schools and state-subsidised private schools receive school kits from the Ministry of Education (MEC) for every level. In 2026 Itapúa had already received them by early February (La Nación, 2026 (opens in a new tab)). Each bag includes a note listing the materials and a QR code, and missing or damaged items can be reported on (0972) 980-715 and (0972) 969-508.

If your child attends a public or subsidised school, open the kit and cross off whatever already came. Take only the missing items to the shop.

When to buy school supplies

In 2026 public-sector classes started on Monday 23 February and end on 30 November (Hoy (opens in a new tab)). February is the busiest month for stationers, so:

  • Buy as soon as you have the list, ideally in early February.
  • Send a photo of the list by WhatsApp and ask for a full quote.
  • Ask whether the brands on the school list are compulsory or whether equivalents are fine.

There is a second rush in September: the Municipality runs the Estudiantina, which brings together the district's schools (Municipality of Obligado, 2026 (opens in a new tab)). If your child takes part, order the card, paint and other materials the school asks for in good time.

Where to look if Obligado does not have it

Obligado sits at km 38 of Route PY06, between Hohenau (km 35) and Bella Vista (km 48) (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). If something is not available in town, try the other two Colonias Unidas towns first; they are minutes away.

For more choice, Encarnación is about 40 km away (La Nación, 2025 (opens in a new tab)). Its shopping area moved near the San Roque González de Santa Cruz bridge and is known as the Circuito Comercial (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)), where you can compare several shops in one trip. In season, note that school supplies are among the things Argentine shoppers cross from Posadas to buy (Última Hora, 2025 (opens in a new tab)), so expect crowds and gaps on the shelves.

Books: special orders and the Encarnación book fair

  • Special orders: for a specific title, ask the shop to order it and check the lead time and deposit.
  • School reading: ask the school for the exact publisher and edition before buying.
  • Libroferia Encarnación: organised by the Universidad Autónoma de Encarnación (UNAE) at its Campus Urbano. In 2026 it ran from 1 to 6 September with 20 exhibitors and free entry (La Nación (opens in a new tab); ABC Color (opens in a new tab)). It is the best chance all year to see Paraguayan publishers and authors in one place.

Paying and invoices

Ask whether they take QR, card or bank transfer: QR now accounts for 68.1% of electronic payments processed by Bancard (ABC Color, 2026 (opens in a new tab)). If you are buying for a business, the cooperative or an institution, ask for an invoice with the tax ID (RUC) before you pay.
