Bars and nightlife in Obligado: Club Alemán, ChoppFest and getting home

Nightlife in Obligado revolves around the Club Alemán and the colony's festivals, not a strip of bars. A normal weekend means a quiet draught beer and an early dinner; the big night of the year is ChoppFest in November, the German club's beer festival. If you want clubs or several bars in one night, head to Encarnación, about 40 km down Route PY06.

Where to have a drink on an ordinary weekend

Before going out, message by WhatsApp or Instagram to confirm they are open that night and until when the kitchen serves; in a small town, many places close early on weeknights.

ChoppFest: making the most of the biggest night

It is run by the Sociedad Cultural y Deportiva Alemana at the Club Alemán. The 52nd edition in 2024 ran from Friday 8 to Sunday 10 November, with more than 20,000 people expected and about 20,000 litres of draught beer (Última Hora, 2024 (opens in a new tab)). That year's programme is a useful guide:

  • Friday: opening parade at 19:00 and a dinner-dance show.
  • Saturday: the main night, with two stages and international bands.
  • Sunday: lunch with local bands, good if you would rather not stay up late.

There is traditional German food and dessert, and many people dress in German-style costume. The 2026 edition is announced for 6, 7 and 8 November (Visit Colonias Unidas (opens in a new tab)). Sort out where to sleep first: in August 2025 the mayor said there were no hotel rooms left to rent in Obligado (La Nación, 2025 (opens in a new tab)). See our guide to hotels in Obligado.

Other festival nights in the Colonias Unidas

The neighbouring colonies have their own nights a few kilometres away: Obligado is at km 38 of the PY06, Hohenau at km 35 and Bella Vista at km 48 (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). According to the Visit Colonias Unidas calendar (opens in a new tab), September brings the National Festival of Communities in Hohenau, October the Yerba Mate Festival in Bella Vista, and December Christmas in Bella Vista, with several evenings of events. For daytime plans around these festivals, see entertainment in Obligado.

Want bars and clubs? Go to Encarnación

For a long night, Encarnación has what Obligado lacks. The riverside Costanera and the food court at the corner of República del Paraguay and Gaspar Rodríguez de Francia avenues run every night (ABC Color, 2024 (opens in a new tab)). In summer the city runs evening events at the Pérgola on Playa San José and riverside cinema from January to March (Última Hora (opens in a new tab)). If you will be drinking, the easiest plan is to sleep there. More ideas in our guide to bars in Encarnación.

Getting back safely

  • Zero tolerance at the wheel: breath tests are strict, with fines, vehicle impound and licence suspension, and from 0.251 mg/l the case goes to prosecutors (Hoy, 2026 (opens in a new tab)).
  • Roads at night: the PY06 links the colony towns with Encarnación, and outside the urban area many roads are dirt (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). Skip shortcuts after rain.
  • Age and public drinking: Law 1642/2000 (opens in a new tab) bans selling alcohol to under-20s, lets venues ask for ID and bans drinking on public roads. Carry your ID.
  • Plan your ride: pick a driver who will not drink, or stay near the party.

Paying

In Itapúa, as in Central and Alto Paraná, QR codes now account for over 60% of electronic payments in shops (Infonegocios, 2025 (opens in a new tab)), but bring cash in guaraníes for club canteens and festival stalls. If you come from Brazil, ask about Pix: businesses on the Bancard network can accept it since 2024 (Infonegocios (opens in a new tab)).
