In this guide
Obligado works best with kids by day and outdoors: an afternoon of beach and volleyball at Puerto Obligado on the Paraná River, a swim at Parque Manantial in neighbouring Hohenau, 3 km down Route PY06, and a yerba mate tour in Bella Vista. With a full day, add the Jesuit ruins of Trinidad or the beach in Encarnación.
What to do with kids in Obligado
- Puerto Obligado. The old Itacaguaré port on the Paraná is the district's main outing (La Nación, 2025 (opens in a new tab)). It has a beach area, camping, a volleyball court, a covered barbecue area and a canteen (Visit Colonias Unidas (opens in a new tab)). Tip: bring insect repellent, hats and water, and stay for sunset when the heat drops.
- Museo Histórico de la Colonia Obligado. Shows kids how the first settlers lived in the town now called the "Capital of Cooperativism" (La Nación, 2025 (opens in a new tab)). A short visit; pair it with the port.
- Country roads by bike. Fields and woodland around town are good for walking, cycling and birdwatching (La Nación, 2025 (opens in a new tab)). Many roads outside the centre are still dirt (opens in a new tab), so pick another plan after rain.
Summer highs reach about 38 °C (opens in a new tab): head out early and save midday for the shade.
Where to swim and get outdoors nearby
Hohenau is right next door, at km 35 of PY06 (opens in a new tab).
- Parque Manantial (Hohenau). On Avenida Elsa Graf, with pools, camping, picnic areas and a restaurant (Visit Colonias Unidas (opens in a new tab); Parque Manantial (opens in a new tab)). Guest reviews on its website mention a pool slide. It runs as a hotel, so message them on WhatsApp (+595 985 842795) to ask about day visits.
- Parque Ecológico y Eco-Museo Ing. Alfredo Sitzmann (Hohenau). A 25-hectare park with a nature area, an eco-museum and sports and play areas (Visit Colonias Unidas (opens in a new tab)). Good for running around and a picnic.
- Centro Histórico y Cultural Edwin Krug (Hohenau). The town museum (Visit Colonias Unidas (opens in a new tab); Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). A rainy-day option.
What to see in Bella Vista with kids
Bella Vista is at km 48 of PY06 (opens in a new tab), 10 km further north. It is yerba mate country, and the tours work for families:
- Aventura Selecta. A Mate Bar, the "Yerbatero por un día" (yerba farmer for a day) tour and a nature reserve (Visit Colonias Unidas (opens in a new tab); La Nación, 2021 (opens in a new tab)).
- Guyra'í Rape by Yerba Mate Pajarito. A trail through the history of mate, tereré and cocido, with a museum, yerba fields and a plant nursery (Pajarito (opens in a new tab); Visit Colonias Unidas (opens in a new tab)).
- Paseo de las Hamacas. Hammocks set up at the roundabout, the Parque Urbano, the Niño Jesús neighbourhood and the Fordi municipal beach (Visit Colonias Unidas (opens in a new tab)). Free and shady.
Tours need booking, so message ahead for times and places. For maps and leaflets, stop at Mate Róga, the tourist office at the PY06 roundabout next to Bella Vista's town hall (La Nación, 2021 (opens in a new tab)).
Is a day trip to Trinidad or Encarnación worth it?
- Jesuit ruins of Trinidad. A UNESCO World Heritage site on the same PY06, about 30 km from Encarnación (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). According to Wikivoyage (opens in a new tab), it opens daily 7 a.m.–7 p.m. in summer and until 5 or 5:30 p.m. in winter, and the ticket is valid for three days and covers other ruins, including Jesús, 12 km away. With kids, go early: the site is large and has little shade at noon.
- Playa San José (Encarnación). A 700 m beach on the Paraná; the season runs from the second half of October until after Easter, with lifeguards from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. during that time (Encarnación municipality (opens in a new tab)). Perfect for a hot day.
Which festivals suit families?
Dates change every year; check the Visit Colonias Unidas events page (opens in a new tab).

Getting there and where to stay
Obligado sits at km 38 of PY06 (opens in a new tab), about 40 km from Encarnación and 414 km from Asunción (La Nación, 2025 (opens in a new tab)). To combine the port, Hohenau and Bella Vista in one day, a car is easiest. Book a room early: in August 2025 the mayor said Obligado had no hotel rooms left to rent (opens in a new tab).
A family Saturday: pool morning in Hohenau, lunch, a shady rest in Bella Vista's hammocks and sunset at Puerto Obligado.
