Hotels in Obligado: where to stay in Itapúa and when to book

Where to sleep in and around Obligado, when beds run out and what to ask before booking in the Colonias Unidas.

A white hotel bed with a rust lumbar pillow and beige throw sits beside glass doors facing palm trees and a turquoise pool.

Obligado has very few beds: in August 2025 the mayor said there was no hotel space left to rent and that residents were getting ready to let rooms or houses (La Nación (opens in a new tab)). So if you want to stay in Obligado, book early, and if it is full, look in Hohenau or Bella Vista, right next door on Route PY06, or in Encarnación, about 40 km away.

What to ask before you book

  • Tourism registration: holiday rentals offered on platforms or social media must register with the National Tourism Register under Law 2828/05 (La Nación, 2024 (opens in a new tab)), and the tourism authority (Senatur) advises checking Registur before booking (La Nación, 2024 (opens in a new tab)). If you rent a house through Facebook or WhatsApp, ask about it.
  • Air conditioning and heating: summer highs reach around 38 °C and winter can drop below -4 °C near the Paraná (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). Ask about both.
  • Access road: outside the town centre some streets are still dirt and being paved with stone (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). If the place is out of town, ask how the road holds up in rain.
  • Parking and early breakfast: essential if you are working with farms or following the rally.
  • Written confirmation: get dates, total price and payment method in a message.

Getting there

Obligado is about 414 km from Asunción (La Nación (opens in a new tab)), on PY06, the road linking Encarnación with Alto Paraná (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). Buses run north along PY06 from Encarnación's bus terminal (Wikivoyage (opens in a new tab)). If you plan to move between the port, the cooperative and the ruins, a car makes it much easier.

FAQ

Are there hotels in Obligado?

Very few. In 2025 the mayor said there was no hotel space left and residents rent out rooms or houses. If it is full, try Hohenau, Bella Vista or Encarnación.

Where is Hotel Tirol?

Not in Obligado but in Capitán Miranda, Itapúa, closer to Encarnación. In December 2019 a project of about US$30 million was announced to turn it into a resort with a water park; we found no recent information confirming it takes guests today, so contact it directly before planning a stay.

When should I book well ahead?

For the Rally del Paraguay in late August, when the rest of Itapúa hit 80% occupancy in 2026, and for the November ChoppFest at the Club Alemán.

How far is Encarnación?

About 40 km along PY06. Obligado is at km 38 of that road, between Hohenau and Bella Vista.
