In this guide
  1. Half a day in Obligado: port, museum and cooperative
  2. A day around Colonias Unidas: Hohenau and Bella Vista
  3. A weekend: Trinidad and Encarnación
  4. When to go
  5. Getting there and where to stay
  6. What to pack

Obligado works well as a one-day trip: a morning at Puerto Obligado on the Paraná River, the colony museum, and an afternoon at the yerba mate estates of Bella Vista or the pools of Hohenau, all a few kilometres apart on Route PY06. With a weekend, add the Jesuit ruins of Trinidad or the beach in Encarnación, and check whether your dates fall on November's ChoppFest.

Half a day in Obligado: port, museum and cooperative

A day around Colonias Unidas: Hohenau and Bella Vista

Obligado sits at km 38 of PY06, between Hohenau (km 35) and Bella Vista (km 48) (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). By car, all three fit easily into one day.

Morning in Hohenau

Afternoon in Bella Vista, yerba mate country

The yerba mate tours need a booking. End the day with sunset at Puerto Obligado.

A weekend: Trinidad and Encarnación

  • Jesuit ruins of Trinidad. A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1993 and the best-preserved mission in Paraguay, on the same PY06, about 30 km from Encarnación (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). According to Wikivoyage (opens in a new tab), it opens daily from 7:00 to 19:00 in summer and until 17:00 or 17:30 in winter, and the ticket is valid for three days and covers other ruins, including Jesús, 12 km away. Allow one to two hours and go early: there is little shade.
  • Playa San José (Encarnación). A 700-metre beach on the Paraná; the season runs from the second half of October until after Easter week, with lifeguards from 8:00 to 20:00 (Encarnación municipality (opens in a new tab)). A good hot-Sunday stop before heading home.

When to go

Getting there and where to stay

Obligado is about 40 km from Encarnación and 414 km from Asunción (La Nación, 2025 (opens in a new tab)). Buses link the towns in the area and run regularly to the capital (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)), but a car is the practical way to combine the port, Hohenau and Bella Vista.

Book early: in August 2025 the mayor said there was no hotel space left to rent in town (La Nación, 2025 (opens in a new tab)). In the centre, Hotel Kegler has rooms with private bathrooms and air conditioning, plus the Tía Silvia restaurant (Visit Colonias Unidas (opens in a new tab); Kayak (opens in a new tab)). If it is full, Encarnación is the easiest base.

What to pack

  • Cash in guaraníes for canteens and small stops.
  • Repellent, a hat and water for the port and Trinidad.
  • Closed shoes for rural roads and yerba plantations.
