In this guide
Going out in Obligado is mostly a daytime and weekend thing: an afternoon at Puerto Obligado on the Paraná River, the German Club, which hosts the ChoppFest beer festival in November, and the neighbouring colonies of Hohenau and Bella Vista a few minutes away on Route PY06. Evenings are quiet and small-town, and the real nightlife happens at the colony festivals.
What to do in Obligado itself
- Puerto Obligado. The old Itacaguaré port on the Paraná is one of the district's main sights (La Nación (opens in a new tab)). It has a beach area, camping, a volleyball court, a barbecue shelter for events and a food stand, plus a historic house once used by General Stroessner and the first shop for Colonias Unidas products (Visit Colonias Unidas (opens in a new tab)). Bring insect repellent and water.
- Club Alemán de Obligado. A German-style clubhouse with a synthetic football pitch, basketball court and canteen. It is the meeting point for the German-descended community and the ChoppFest venue.
- Museo Histórico de la Colonia Obligado. The local history museum of a town that calls itself the "Capital of Cooperativism".
- Colonias Unidas cooperative tour. The cooperative runs guided visits to its plants (La Nación (opens in a new tab)). Arrange it in advance.
- Rural roads. Farmland and patches of forest around town are good for walking, cycling and birdwatching. Go early in summer.
When are the festivals?
Dates change every year, so check the Visit Colonias Unidas events page (opens in a new tab) before you travel:
- ChoppFest at Club Alemán de Obligado: every November; the 2026 edition is announced for 6–8 November (Visit Colonias Unidas (opens in a new tab)).
- Fiesta Nacional de las Colectividades (Hohenau): September; in 2025 it ran 26–28 September at Parque de las Naciones.
- Yerba Mate Festival (Bella Vista): October, with the town's anniversary; 11–12 October in 2025.
- International Fishing Contest (Bella Vista) in September and Christmas in Bella Vista on several December nights.
Book a bed early for ChoppFest: Obligado has very little hotel space (La Nación (opens in a new tab)), and many visitors sleep in Encarnación.
Bella Vista, 10 minutes up the road
Bella Vista sits at km 48 of PY06, 10 km past Obligado, and is Paraguay's "yerba mate capital":
- Mate Róga: the tourist office at the PY06 roundabout at the town entrance, next to the Municipality, with maps and leaflets (La Nación, 2021 (opens in a new tab)).
- Aventura Selecta: Yerba Mate Selecta's Mate Bar plus its "Yerbatero por un día" and nature-reserve tours (Visit Colonias Unidas (opens in a new tab)).
- Guyra'í Rape by Yerba Mate Pajarito: a tour of the history of mate, tereré and cocido with a museum, yerba fields and nursery, on Av. Marcial Samaniego (Pajarito (opens in a new tab)).
- Museo de los Inmigrantes on the main square and Museo Los Fundadores, with thousands of objects from the colony's early days.
- Club de Caza y Pesca Bella Vista: riverside grounds with barbecue shelters and a restaurant; good for sunset.
Message each tour first to confirm times and whether you need to book.
Hohenau and the Trinidad ruins
- Hohenau is right next to Obligado (km 35). Visit the Centro Histórico y Cultural Edwin Krug, the town museum of early-settler objects.
- Jesuit ruins of Trinidad. Paraguay's best-preserved Jesuit reduction and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1993, about 30 km from Encarnación on the same PY06 (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). According to Wikivoyage (opens in a new tab), it opens at 07:00 and closes at 19:00 in summer and between 17:00 and 17:30 in winter, and the ticket also covers the Jesús mission, 12 km away. Allow one to two hours and go early.
Beach and city nights: Encarnación
For clubs, the riverside promenade or a beach, head to Encarnación, about 38 km south. Playa San José is 700 m long; the season runs from the second half of October until after Easter, with lifeguards 08:00–20:00 during that period (Encarnación municipality (opens in a new tab)). If you drink, have a sober driver or stay the night.
Getting there and around
Obligado is at km 38 of Route PY06 between Encarnación and Alto Paraná (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)), about 410 km from Asunción. Buses heading north on PY06 leave from Encarnación's bus terminal. To combine the port, Bella Vista, Hohenau and Trinidad in one day, a car is easiest; outside the town centre some roads are dirt and get tricky after rain.
