Entertainment in Obligado happens by day and at festivals: an afternoon of beach and volleyball at Puerto Obligado on the Paraná River, a game or a beer at the Club Alemán, which hosts the ChoppFest every November, and pools or museums in Hohenau and Bella Vista, a few kilometres away on Route PY06. The best way to plan a weekend is to check the Colonias Unidas festival calendar before you go.
What to do in Obligado on a weekend
- Puerto Obligado. The old Itacaguaré port on the Paraná is the district's main outing (La Nación (opens in a new tab)). It has a beach area, camping, a volleyball court, a quincho (covered barbecue area) and a canteen with food and drinks (Visit Colonias Unidas (opens in a new tab)). Bring repellent and water, and stay for the sunset.
- Club Alemán de Obligado. A German-style club with a synthetic football pitch, a basketball court and a canteen (Visit Colonias Unidas (opens in a new tab)), and the meeting point of the German-descended community (La Nación (opens in a new tab)). Message ahead if you want to book a pitch.
- Museo Histórico de la Colonia Obligado. The place to understand how the "Capital of Cooperativism" was built (La Nación (opens in a new tab)).
- Cooperativa Colonias Unidas tour. The cooperative runs tours of its industries (La Nación (opens in a new tab)). Arrange it in advance.
- Country roads by bike or on foot. Fields and patches of forest around town suit walking, cycling and birdwatching (La Nación (opens in a new tab)). Start early in summer.
When is ChoppFest, and what other festivals are there?
Festivals are the area's nightlife. Dates are posted on the Visit Colonias Unidas events page (opens in a new tab):
- ChoppFest at the Club Alemán (Obligado): every November; this year's edition is announced for 6–8 November.
- National Festival of the Communities (Hohenau): September, at Parque de las Naciones; in 2025 it ran 26–28 September.
- Orchid Expo and Sale (Hohenau): at Salón Armonía; the 12th edition was announced in September 2026.
- Yerba Mate Festival (Bella Vista): October, alongside the town's anniversary.
- International Fishing Contest (Bella Vista): September.
- Christmas in Bella Vista: several nights in December.
Obligado's municipality also holds a September Estudiantina with local schools (Municipalidad de Obligado (opens in a new tab)). Book a bed early for ChoppFest: in August 2025 the mayor said there were no hotel rooms available to rent in Obligado (La Nación (opens in a new tab)), so many visitors stay in Encarnación.
Where to spend a day by the pool or in nature
- Parque Manantial (Hohenau). On Avenida Elsa Graf, with pools, camping, picnic areas and a restaurant (Visit Colonias Unidas (opens in a new tab); Parque Manantial (opens in a new tab)). Guests mention a pool slide, which kids love. Ask on WhatsApp whether they take day visitors.
- Parque Ecológico y Eco-Museo Ing. Alfredo Sitzmann (Hohenau). A 25-hectare site with ecological, eco-museum, sports and recreation areas (Visit Colonias Unidas (opens in a new tab)).
- Club de Caza y Pesca Bella Vista. Open-air grounds on the Paraná with quinchos and sunset views (Visit Colonias Unidas (opens in a new tab); La Nación, 2021 (opens in a new tab)).
- Paseo de las Hamacas (Bella Vista). Hammocks at the roundabout, the Parque Urbano, barrio Niño Jesús, the fishing club's port and the Fordi municipal beach (Visit Colonias Unidas (opens in a new tab)). A free afternoon in the shade.
Yerba mate tours and museums nearby
- Aventura Selecta (Bella Vista): a Mate Bar, the "Yerba farmer for a day" tour and a nature reserve (Visit Colonias Unidas (opens in a new tab); La Nación, 2021 (opens in a new tab)).
- Guyra'í Rape by Yerba Mate Pajarito (Bella Vista): a guided route through the history of mate, tereré and cocido (Pajarito (opens in a new tab); Visit Colonias Unidas (opens in a new tab)).
- Centro Histórico y Cultural Edwin Krug (Hohenau): the town history museum (Visit Colonias Unidas (opens in a new tab)).
Tours need booking. In Bella Vista, the Mate Róga tourist office sits at the PY06 roundabout next to the Municipalidad (La Nación, 2021 (opens in a new tab)).
A day at the Trinidad ruins
The UNESCO-listed Trinidad Jesuit mission is on the same PY06, about 30 km from Encarnación (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). According to Wikivoyage (opens in a new tab), it opens daily 7:00–19:00 in summer and until 17:00 or 17:30 in winter. The ticket is valid for 72 hours and covers Jesús, 12 km away, and San Cosme y Damián; in April 2026 it cost G. 40,000 for foreigners, G. 25,000 for Paraguayans and G. 12,500 for Paraguayans aged 66+, with children up to 12 free (La Nación, 2026 (opens in a new tab)). Allow one to two hours and go early.
Getting there and around
Obligado is at km 38 of Route PY06; Hohenau is at km 35 and Bella Vista at km 48 (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). It is about 410 km from Asunción and 35 km from Encarnación (Visit Colonias Unidas (opens in a new tab)). Local buses and services to the capital exist (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)), but a car makes it far easier to combine the port, Hohenau and Bella Vista in one day. Many rural roads are still unpaved, so check after rain. If you drink at a festival, ride back with someone who doesn't.
