Food and meals pacing in Asunción: what to eat, when and where

A big lunch at midday, cocido with chipa morning and afternoon, and each meal kept in one neighbourhood to dodge heat and traffic.

In Asunción the big meal is lunch at midday, and the heat shapes the rest of the day: anything outdoors happens early or once the sun drops, and each meal stays in one neighbourhood. That way you eat well without crossing the city at the hottest hour.

What do people eat at each point of the day?

How do you fit meals around the heat?

November to February is the hottest stretch, with January averaging highs of 36 °C (Wikivoyage (opens in a new tab)). The Ministry of Health advises outdoor activity before 10:00 or after 17:00, drinking water even when you are not thirsty and wearing light clothes (MSPBS (opens in a new tab)).

A summer day that works:

  1. Walk or museum first thing, after cocido and chipa.
  2. Lunch indoors, close to where the morning ended.
  3. Siesta or somewhere air-conditioned after eating.
  4. Merienda and a stroll from 17:00, dinner in the same area.

Where to eat without leaving the neighbourhood

Centro. Lido Bar (opens in a new tab) opened in 1953 and is the classic stop for fish soup, vori vori, chipa guasu and sopa paraguaya (Infonegocios (opens in a new tab)); it serves breakfast, takes cards and has a Villa Morra branch. El Bolsi (opens in a new tab), on Estrella and Alberdi, ran from 07:00 to 01:00 in 2023 (La Nación (opens in a new tab)), handy for a late lunch. Bar Nacional (opens in a new tab), opposite the Panteón de los Héroes, lists 07:00 to 01:00 Monday to Wednesday and until 02:00 Thursday to Saturday (Visit Paraguay (opens in a new tab)). For a cheap lunch, the food stalls of Mercado 4 (opens in a new tab) in Pettirossi feed the people who work there at midday; bring small notes.

Las Mercedes. Bar San Miguel (opens in a new tab), at Avenida España 1165, is known for its milanesas (La Nación (opens in a new tab)).

Villa Morra. Dinner here means booking. Pakuri (opens in a new tab) opens for dinner Tuesday to Saturday and lunch on weekends, and Tierra Colorada Gastró (opens in a new tab) serves dinner Monday to Saturday, according to 50 Best Discovery (opens in a new tab) (Tierra Colorada listing (opens in a new tab)). A Monday lunch plan won't work at either.

Is it worth crossing town for one meal?

Rarely at rush hour. In September 2026 the city's Plan ASU 400 had 138 blocks under works, with fronts on Mariscal López, España, San Martín and Avenida De la Victoria (Municipalidad de Asunción (opens in a new tab)), the very avenues linking the centre and Villa Morra. If you want dinner on the other side, leave after merienda and ride back with an app. More in our getting around Asunción guide.

How do you pay, and how much do you tip?

In April 2026, 7 in 10 electronic payments processed by Bancard were made by QR code (ABC Color (opens in a new tab)). The head of Paraguay's restaurant association put fast-food payments at roughly 60% card and 40% QR, with very little cash (ABC Color, 2026 (opens in a new tab)). Tipping is voluntary: around 10% is the usual courtesy, and Bancard terminals now let you add 5% to 20% in the same payment (ABC Color, 2026 (opens in a new tab)). Still carry small cash for the market and chipa stalls.
