Shops in Ciudad del Este fall into three areas: downtown (the microcentro) next to the Friendship Bridge, where the big import stores are; the newer malls with parking, such as Lago Shopping and Shopping China's new building; and the wholesale markets. Pick the area that matches what you want, compare the same item in two stores and never pay without an invoice.

Which area suits you?

  • Microcentro. It runs from the Rotonda Oasis to around km 4 of the PY02 highway and slopes down towards the port, so walking it is tiring (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). This is where the electronics, perfume, clothing and imported goods are that mainly draw buyers from Brazil and Argentina (La Nación, 2026 (opens in a new tab)). Best for comparing many shops in a few blocks.
  • PY02 service roads. The highway has two service roads, Monseñor Rodríguez and San Blas, running in opposite directions (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). Several big stores and malls with parking sit along them; if you drive, use the one on your side.
  • Markets. The city's Mercado de Abasto has more than 800 stalls selling fruit, vegetables and clothing (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). Abasto Este in Minga Guazú (km 14.5) sells retail and wholesale: the fresh-food block opens 5:00–19:00, the food court and wholesale store 7:00–22:00 (ABC Color, 2025 (opens in a new tab)).

Named stores and malls

Each of these appears in at least two independent sources:

You do not need the biggest store, but you do need one that gives an invoice in its company name and a written warranty.

When to go

  • Weekday mornings, if you want to test things calmly: downtown fills up with shopping tourists. Monalisa, for one, closed at 16:00 in 2021, so do not leave shopping for late afternoon.
  • Black Friday CDE. The Chamber of Commerce and Services has set it for 19–22 November 2026, covering electronics, perfume, clothing, footwear and toys, with hotels reaching 95–100% occupancy on peak days (Prensa Mercosur, 2026 (opens in a new tab)). More than 300,000 people came in 2025 (La Nación, 2025 (opens in a new tab)). If you go, book a room now and expect crowds.

How to pay

Before you pay, and if something goes wrong

  1. Test the product in the shop and check that the serial number on the box matches the device.
  2. Ask for an invoice: consumer agency SEDECO reminds shoppers that every sale requires one (ABC Color (opens in a new tab)).
  3. Any warranty must be in writing, with its term and scope (art. 11, Law 1334 (opens in a new tab)).
  4. If the shop will not respond, the City Hall has a Consumer Protection Office: in February 2026 it helped two Brazilian buyers get their money back together with the police and prosecutors, and urged visitors to complain straight away (Última Hora, 2026 (opens in a new tab)).

If you are going back to Brazil

By land, Brazil's Receita Federal allows US$ 500 per person every 30 days, individual and non-transferable; goods over US$ 5 are capped at 10 units, with no more than 3 identical, and everything must be for personal use (Receita Federal (opens in a new tab)). Keep all your invoices together for customs.
