In this guide
To budget for Obligado, start with accommodation: there are very few beds, and in August 2025 the mayor said hotels had no rooms left (La Nación, 2025 (opens in a new tab)). If you are visiting, book before anything else and spend little at the riverside port and on the country roads; if you are moving here, start from rent, compare it with the G. 3,044,000 minimum wage (ABC Color (opens in a new tab)) and add a fixed line for trips to Encarnación, about 40 km away.
When is Obligado most expensive?
- ChoppFest (November): the Club Alemán beer festival is announced for 6, 7 and 8 November 2026 (Visit Colonias Unidas (opens in a new tab)). In 2024 the organisers expected more than 20,000 people (Última Hora, 2024 (opens in a new tab)) in a town already short of beds. If you go, lock in accommodation as soon as you have the dates.
- Rally del Paraguay (late August): in 2026 Encarnación hit 100% occupancy and the rest of Itapúa 80% (InfoNegocios (opens in a new tab); La Nación (opens in a new tab)).
- The rest of the year: demand comes from the cooperative and farm work. If Obligado is full, Hohenau (km 35 on PY06) and Bella Vista (km 48) are minutes away (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)).
If you rent a room or house through social media, ask whether it is on SENATUR's Registur: alternative accommodation must register (La Nación, 2024 (opens in a new tab)). More options in our guide to hotels in Obligado.
Things to do on a small budget
- Puerto Obligado: the old Itacaguaré port on the Paraná is the district's main outing (La Nación, 2025 (opens in a new tab)), with a beach area, camping, a volleyball court, a covered barbecue area and a snack bar (Visit Colonias Unidas (opens in a new tab)). Bring your own food and mate; ask on site whether camping is charged.
- Museo Histórico de la Colonia Obligado: tells how the colony was formed (La Nación, 2025 (opens in a new tab)). Good for the hottest part of the day.
- Country roads: good for walking, cycling and birdwatching (La Nación, 2025 (opens in a new tab)). Many are dirt (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)), so skip them after rain.
- Cooperativa Colonias Unidas tour: the cooperative runs tours of its plants (La Nación, 2025 (opens in a new tab)). Arrange the day in advance and ask whether there is a fee.
- Trinidad ruins: on the same PY06, towards Encarnación. One ticket covers Trinidad, Jesús and San Cosme y Damián for 72 hours, day and night; in April 2026 it cost G. 25,000 for Paraguayans and G. 40,000 for foreigners (ABC Color, 2023 (opens in a new tab); La Nación, 2026 (opens in a new tab)).
To plan a full day, see our Obligado travel guide.
Moving here: wages, rent and electricity
- Reference wage: G. 3,044,000 a month since 1 July 2026 (ABC Color (opens in a new tab)). Formal jobs deduct 9% for IPS social security (ABC Color, 2022 (opens in a new tab)), which gives you access to IPS health care.
- Local jobs: the Cooperativa Colonias Unidas employs more than 1,200 people, and there are food and animal-feed plants (La Nación, 2025 (opens in a new tab)).
- Rent: supply is small, though more farmers are moving into town and building flats to rent (La Nación, 2025 (opens in a new tab)). Paraguay has no specific tenancy law: there is no legal deposit amount (one month is usual), a contract with no term is presumed to last one year, and there is no cap on increases (InfoNegocios, 2025 (opens in a new tab)). Make sure the contract says how and when rent is adjusted.
- Electricity: Obligado swings from summer highs of about 38 °C to frosts down to -4 °C near the river (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)), so you pay for air conditioning and for heating. A study presented in July 2026 recommends raising the average ANDE tariff by up to 39.4% gradually through 2030 (Última Hora (opens in a new tab)), so leave room in that line.
Transport and health: the lines that blow up
- Travel: Obligado is about 40 km from Encarnación and 414 km from Asunción (La Nación, 2025 (opens in a new tab)), with buses around the region and to the capital (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). Dinatran, the transport regulator, publishes official long-distance fares and asks passengers to report overcharging (Hoy, 2025 (opens in a new tab)).
- Health: IPS has a health unit in Hohenau, and complex cases are referred to Encarnación, to the public hospital or IPS (ABC Color, 2026 (opens in a new tab)). Budget at least one trip to Encarnación a month if you see specialists.
- Vehicle: with dirt roads in the rural areas, add a line for tyres and suspension.
Keeping track of the month
- Pay by QR: it already accounts for 60% of payments in supermarkets, service stations and pharmacies (La Nación, 2025 (opens in a new tab)), and leaves a spending record on your phone.
- Keep two budgets: a weekend one (accommodation, food, tickets) and a monthly one (rent, electricity, transport, health).
- Review after the first month: log two weeks of real spending and adjust your spreadsheet with those numbers.
