San Bernardino is about 50 km from Asunción on the shore of Lake Ypacaraí, and it works best with a simple plan: lakefront and La Rotonda beach in the morning, lunch and the pedestrian street at midday, the Virgin's lookout at sunset. On a Saturday, start at the square's market; in January, check the amphitheatre's concert calendar first.

What to do by the lake?

1. La Rotonda beach and park. The summer meeting point. In the 2025 season, access to the park and bike path was free, craft and food stalls ran daily 08:00 to 20:00, catamaran rides cost G. 30,000 and controlled parking G. 10,000, according to ABC Color (opens in a new tab).

  • Tip: arrive before 10:00 on January weekends; parking fills up.

2. Lake Ypacaraí waterfront. The classic walk, especially at sunset (Última Hora (opens in a new tab)). Bring something to sit on and watch the sun go down.

About the water: the municipal beach in the historic centre has an environmental licence, but the environment ministry (MADES) says that does not make the lake fit for swimming (ABC Color (opens in a new tab)). Sunbathe, take the catamaran, but stay out of the water.

What to see in the historic centre?

3. Stairway and lookout of the Virgen Aparecida. On one of the highest points of the old town, with lake views and a statue of the Virgin (Infonegocios (opens in a new tab)). The climb is steep: wear good shoes, carry water, and go late in the afternoon.

4. Tourist Experience Centre (Casona Büttner). At the corner of Colonos Alemanes and the Nuestra Señora de la Asunción pedestrian street. When it opened in January 2024 it offered a virtual-reality tour of the town and local craft displays, open Monday to Wednesday 08:00 to 20:00 and Thursday to Sunday 08:00 to 21:00 (La Nación (opens in a new tab)). A good first stop to get your bearings.

5. Pedestrian street. A few blocks from the lake, for a stroll, a snack and souvenirs (Última Hora (opens in a new tab)).

6. Hotel del Lago. One of the late-19th-century buildings tied to the town's German history (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)); it opened in 1888 on the initiative of German settler Guillermo Weiler, and guests included Charles de Gaulle and Antoine de Saint-Exupéry (La Nación, 2019 (opens in a new tab)). Worth a look from outside even if you aren't staying.

7. Unknown Paraguayan Soldier Monument. In the square of the same name, which hosted a food park in 2018 (Última Hora (opens in a new tab)).

What to do on a Saturday?

8. "Shopping mercado San Ber" market. In Plaza Gral. Bernardino Caballero, every Saturday 08:00 to 14:00: Swiss-style and local cheeses, honey, spices, fruit, leather, wood carvings, traditional food and desserts. Many stallholders descend from the 19th-century European settlers (ABC Color (opens in a new tab)). Bring cash and a bag.

What happens at night in summer?

9. José Asunción Flores Amphitheatre. The venue for January's big concerts; in 2025 the line-up included Los Auténticos Decadentes and Vilma Palma (ABC Color (opens in a new tab)). Buy tickets ahead and plan your exit: queues build at the access roads afterwards.

10. Casa Hassler. Opens its summer season with dance and visual arts; in 2025 it started on 4 January at 21:00 (ABC Color (opens in a new tab)). Check its calendar for cultural nights.

How to plan the day?

  • Half day: waterfront, La Rotonda and a walk on the pedestrian street.
  • Full day: add Casona Büttner, lunch in the centre and the Virgin's lookout at sunset.
  • Weekend: Saturday market in the morning and the amphitheatre or Casa Hassler at night; Sunday, lake early and head back before 16:00.

High season runs from December to mid-February (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). Outside it the town is much quieter and you eat without waiting.

How to get there from Asunción?

By car there are two routes: Ruta PY02 Mariscal Estigarribia to the San Bernardino turn-off, or the Luque–San Bernardino road along the other side of the lake (Última Hora (opens in a new tab)). Buses from Asunción also run via PY02. The Sunday afternoon return gets slow: leave early or stay for dinner and drive back at night.
