To go out in San Bernardino, check the date first: high season runs from December to mid-February (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)), when nightlife happens in the clubs in the Anfiteatro woods and the lakeside bars, nearly all with advance booking. By day and at sunset the plan is the Lake Ypacaraí waterfront, the German-style cafés and the concerts at the José Asunción Flores amphitheatre. Below is where each place is and how to plan the evening.

Where is the nightlife in high season?

These are the venues Infonegocios listed for the 2025 season (opens in a new tab); check their social media before going, as days and prices change every summer:

  • Diablada. On the lakeshore, with views of the Ypacaraí. Open Thursday to Sunday: 19:00 to 22:00 is for family dinners and pets, and from 22:30 it turns to music and dancing. Book at diablada.com.py. The pick if you want dinner and to stay on.
  • Mambo. In the Anfiteatro woods, Fridays and Saturdays, with guest DJs in season. Tickets are booked via WhatsApp.
  • Mokai. A lounge bar in the same Anfiteatro woods. Fridays are 19+ and Saturdays 23+, with advance booking.
  • Amelia. Open-air bar Friday to Sunday from 22:00, with fireworks at midnight. Booking is required; in 2025 entry was G. 120,000 for men and G. 100,000 for women.
  • Casa Corona. Saturdays only from 22:00, 23+.

Bring ID: several venues check age at the door.

Sunset on the lake: the waterfront

Note: Lake Ypacaraí is not approved for swimming because of cyanobacteria (ABC Color, 2024 (opens in a new tab)). Enjoy the view, stay out of the water.

Where to eat before going out

An ABC Color tour of the town in 2020 (opens in a new tab) named these places; some may have changed, so check their social media first:

  • Cafés and German cooking: Café Francés, Grimm's Confitería, Restaurant Oktoberfest and Restaurante Selva Negra, a legacy of the town's German settlers.
  • Something quick: the Chivito Uruguayo and Heladería Casita.
  • Craft beer: Sacramento Brewing Co. and San Beer.

In season, restaurants, bars and ice-cream shops adapt their menus, and December and January weekends bring food and craft fairs (Infonegocios, 2025 (opens in a new tab)).

Concerts and culture

What if you go out of season?

The municipality promotes San Ber as a "Destino 365" (Infonegocios, 2025 (opens in a new tab)), but most clubs run in summer. The plan becomes a quiet Saturday: the market on Plaza General Bernardino Caballero (Saturdays 07:00 to 13:00, per ABC Color, 2020 (opens in a new tab)), the parish church on Calle 15 de Agosto with its 110-step stairway up to the Virgen Aparecida viewpoint, and dinner at a café in town.

Getting there and back

San Bernardino is about 48 km from Asunción (ABC Color, 2020 (opens in a new tab)). Take Ruta PY02 or the Ecovía, which links Luque with San Bernardino around the other side of the lake. In season, extra parking areas open to ease the centre and police run vehicle checks at the town entrances (Infonegocios, 2025 (opens in a new tab)). If you are going out at night, pick a designated driver or stay over at a guesthouse.
