In this guide
A San Bernardino weekend works best with a night or two there: arrive on Friday before dark, spend Saturday on the plaza market, the town centre and sunset at the lookout, and on Sunday drive up to Altos or Caacupé before heading back early to Asunción, about 50 km away (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). You can look at Lake Ypacaraí and ride a catamaran on it, but it is not for swimming.
When to go and where to stay
- High season: December to mid-February (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). Concerts and fairs, but more traffic and higher prices. From March to November the town is quiet and easier to book at short notice.
- What is there: more than 60 places to stay, including about 25 hotels, around 40 posadas (guesthouses), cabins, glamping and casaquintas (holiday houses with a pool) (La Nación, January 2026 (opens in a new tab)).
- Cost: in summer 2026 a night ran from G. 150,000 to G. 1,000,000 per person, and a casaquinta from Friday to Monday from G. 3,000,000 to G. 7,000,000 (La Nación (opens in a new tab)). Split among a big group, the house often works out cheaper.
- Before paying a deposit: look the place up in Senatur's Registur, which lists licensed providers (La Nación (opens in a new tab)), and get the total and cancellation policy in writing.

Friday: arrive in daylight, dinner near the lake
- Leave after lunch or before 17:00. At the town entrance, the traffic light where the road to Altos crosses creates a bottleneck that gets worse in summer (ABC Color, 2025 (opens in a new tab)).
- Leave the car at your lodging and walk: the centre, the pedestrian street and the lakeside promenade are close together (Última Hora (opens in a new tab)).
- Dinner: in season, lakefront spots work by reservation; see where to go out in San Bernardino and book before you arrive.
- Hotel del Lago: the historic hotel opened in 1888 and reopened restored as a hotel-museum in 2006 (La Nación, 2015 (opens in a new tab); hotel website (opens in a new tab)). Walk past it in the evening.
Saturday: market, centre and sunset
08:00–11:00 · "Shopping mercado San Ber" market. On Plaza Gral. Bernardino Caballero, Saturdays 08:00 to 14:00: cheese, honey, fruit, leather, wood carvings and local food (ABC Color, 2023 (opens in a new tab)). Have breakfast there and buy cheese to take home. Bring cash.
11:00 · Casona Büttner. The Centro de Experiencias Turísticas, at Colonos Alemanes and the Nuestra Señora de la Asunción pedestrian street, offered a virtual-reality tour of the town and craft displays when it opened in 2024 (La Nación, 2024 (opens in a new tab)). A good indoor stop for the hottest hours.
Afternoon · lake or adventure.
- La Rotonda beach and park: in January 2025 entry was free, the catamaran ride cost G. 30,000 and parking G. 10,000 (ABC Color (opens in a new tab)).
- Avenida Luis F. Vache cycle path: about 3 km along the lake (ABC Color, 2020 (opens in a new tab)).
- Aventura Xtrema: a 14-obstacle treetop course, climbing wall and canoeing (Infonegocios, 2021 (opens in a new tab)), by reservation (ABC Color, 2020 (opens in a new tab)); Última Hora (opens in a new tab) listed it in 2023 among holiday options for kids.
Sunset · the Virgin's stairway. 110 steps up to a lookout over the lake (ABC Color, 2020 (opens in a new tab)). Take water, then head down for dinner.
About the water: the municipal beach holds an environmental licence, but the environment ministry (MADES) states this does not make the lake fit for swimming (ABC Color, 2024 (opens in a new tab)).
Saturday night in high season
- Anfiteatro José Asunción Flores: the venue for January's big concerts (ABC Color (opens in a new tab)). Buy tickets ahead and walk back if you can, as cars queue at the exit.
- Casa Hassler: in January 2026 it held a free "Noche del Verano" with dance, art and live music (Última Hora (opens in a new tab)). Check its programme for your weekend.
Sunday: Altos or Caacupé, then head home early
Pick one outing, then return to San Bernardino or carry on to Asunción:
- Altos: the woodcarvers' town, 207 m up and about 9 km from the lake, in the Cordillera de los Altos (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). Driving up from San Bernardino you pass the first workshops, such as the Escobar family's (La Nación, 2025 (opens in a new tab)). Details in the Altos day trip.
- Caacupé: the Basilica of the Virgen de los Milagros, on PY02, 54 km from Asunción (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)); it is on your way if you return by that road. See places to visit in Caacupé.
Leave before 16:00. On long weekends PY02 backs up between the San Bernardino turn-off and the Ypacaraí toll (ABC Color, 2026 (opens in a new tab)).
Getting there without a car
Buses run from Asunción along PY02 (Última Hora (opens in a new tab)). The 2023 DINATRAN fare table listed G. 6,200 to the San Bernardino turn-off, not to the lake itself (ABC Color, 2023 (opens in a new tab)), so you still need to cover the last stretch. By car, the alternative is the Luque–San Bernardino road along the other side of the lake (Última Hora (opens in a new tab)).
