To pick a hotel in San Bernardino, start with your dates: from December to mid-February the lakeside town fills up and you should book early; outside that window you get more choice and calmer weekdays. Then choose the type of stay (hotel, posada, cabin or a rented country house), check that it is registered with Paraguay's tourism registry, Registur, and get the deposit and cancellation terms in writing.
What kind of lodging does San Bernardino have?
According to La Nación (January 2026) (opens in a new tab), "San Ber" has more than 60 places to stay: standard and luxury hotels, apart-hotels, glamping, posadas (small guesthouses), cabins and casaquintas (country houses rented whole). From the same report:
- Hotels: about 25, ranging from three rooms to 80 or 100, according to the hotel association Asohotel.
- Posadas: around 40, not all of them registered.
- Beds: roughly 1,100 in total.
- Price range (summer 2026): from G. 150,000 per person up to G. 1,000,000, depending on the option.
- Casaquintas: a Friday-to-Monday weekend cost G. 3,000,000 to G. 7,000,000.
For a couple or a one- or two-night trip, a hotel or posada is simplest. For a large family or group staying several days, a casaquinta can work out cheaper per person, but it needs more checks before you pay.
What about Hotel del Lago? It is San Bernardino's historic hotel on the shore of Lake Ypacaraí: it opened in 1888 and was restored in 2006, reopening as a hotel-museum and cultural centre, according to La Nación (2015) (opens in a new tab) and its own website (opens in a new tab). No recent source confirms it is still taking guests, so look it up on Registur and message the hotel before you plan your trip.
When to book, and when is it quieter?
Peak season runs from December to mid-February (opens in a new tab). January also brings big concerts at the Anfiteatro José Asunción Flores; in 2025 there were shows almost every January weekend, as ABC Color (opens in a new tab) reported. If your trip overlaps with a concert, book early and ask how far the hotel is from the amphitheatre.
Long weekends mean heavy traffic: in late September 2026 there were major jams on the Ecovía road (Luque–San Bernardino) and at the Ypacaraí toll on PY02, km 48 (opens in a new tab). If the hotel has fixed check-in hours, leave early or tell them you will arrive late.
Off-season, local hoteliers market the town as a year-round "365" destination and push short breaks, even on Mondays (La Nación (opens in a new tab)). Weekdays usually mean better rates and more quiet.
Where should you stay?
- Near the shore and Playa La Rotonda: best if you want to walk to the lake. The park and cycle path at La Rotonda are free, craft and food stalls run 8:00 to 20:00, and controlled parking cost G. 10,000 in January 2025 (ABC Color (opens in a new tab)).
- Around the centre and the waterfront: handy without a car, since the lakeside walk and the pedestrian street are walkable (Última Hora (opens in a new tab)).
- Further out: country houses and cabins with more space and quiet, but you will rely on a car.
A note on swimming: the municipal beach has an environmental licence, but the environment ministry (MADES) warned that Lake Ypacaraí is not fit for bathing (opens in a new tab). If you are travelling with kids in summer, pick a place with a pool.
How do you check that a hotel or posada is licensed?
The national tourism office (Senatur) runs Registur, which lists licensed providers, hotels included, and any sanctions (opens in a new tab). Look up the name before you pay.
If you rent a house or flat through Airbnb, Booking or social media, Senatur requires people who rent regularly for tourism to register in Registur under Law 2828/05 (opens in a new tab). This matters in San Ber, where some posadas operate irregularly (La Nación (opens in a new tab)): ask the host for their registration number.
What to ask before paying a deposit
- Exact map location, not just "near the lake".
- Parking: on site or not, and whether your vehicle fits.
- Noise: whether rooms face the street, the shore or a nightlife venue.
- Pool and air conditioning in summer.
- What is included: breakfast, bed linen in rental houses, check-in and check-out times.
- Deposit and refund terms in writing, with dates and the full price.
- Invoice (factura): the consumer agency Sedeco reminds that every sale of goods and services must be invoiced (opens in a new tab).
- Paying from Brazil: merchants on the Bancard network can accept Pix from Brazilian accounts (opens in a new tab), but not all have it enabled.
Getting there
San Bernardino is about 45 to 50 km from Asunción (opens in a new tab). You can drive via PY02 through Ypacaraí or take the Luque–San Bernardino road; long-distance buses use Ruta 2 (Última Hora (opens in a new tab)). Without traffic it is a short drive, but allow extra time on long weekends.
