To choose a mechanic (taller mecánico) in Ñemby, work out what is wrong with the car first and look for a shop with that specialty on your side of the PY01 highway, which splits the city in two. Get a written diagnosis and quote before you authorise the repair, and insist on being told before any extra work: consumer law requires it.
What kind of shop do you need?
Going to the right shop saves you paying for two diagnoses:
- General mechanics: engine, clutch, suspension, brakes, steering.
- Electrics and fuel injection: the car will not start, cuts out or shows a dashboard light. Ask whether they have a scanner for your make.
- Radiator and air conditioning: overheating, coolant leaks, A/C not cooling.
- Body and paint: dents, scratches, insurance work.
- Oil change, tyres and alignment: oil, filters, tyres, balancing.
- Motorbikes: many car shops will not take them; find a bike specialist and ask about parts for your model.
- Dealer service: if the vehicle is still under factory warranty, start there so you do not void it.
Ñemby, the PY01 and where to look
Ruta PY01, formerly Acceso Sur, cuts through the city. Ñemby borders San Lorenzo to the north, Capiatá to the east, San Antonio to the south and Villa Elisa to the west, and its barrios include Villa Anita, Mbokajaty, Salinas, Centro, Vista Alegre, Pa'i Ñu, Rincón, Caaguazú and Cañadita (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)). The most convenient shop may well be in a neighbouring city if it sits on your daily route.
Mind the roadworks: the Public Works Ministry (MOPC) announced an upgrade of the PY01 between Cuatro Mojones and Pratt Gill from August 2026, with grade-separated junctions in areas including Ñemby (Hoy, 2026 (opens in a new tab)). While they last, crossing the highway can take longer, so:
- If the car still drives, choose a shop on your side of the PY01 or on your way to work, so you can drop it off in the morning and collect it after.
- If it overheats, loses brakes or makes a loud noise, keep it off the highway: find something close or call a tow truck.
- To get home without the car, several bus lines link Ñemby with Asunción, San Lorenzo, Fernando de la Mora and San Antonio, such as line 2 (San Lorenzo), 3 Interno (San Antonio), 10 Interno (Fernando de la Mora) and 15-2 or 38 (Asunción) (Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)).
How to get a useful quote
Paraguay's consumer law, Law 1334/98 (opens in a new tab), says a service provider must tell you, among other things, what the service is, the price including taxes and the payment method (art. 15). If a job or cost not in the quote turns up during the repair, they must tell you before doing it (art. 16). And any warranty offered must be in writing, with its term and coverage (art. 11).
So ask for:
- A written diagnosis, and whether it is charged separately or deducted if they do the repair.
- Parts and labour itemised, with brand and whether parts are original, aftermarket or used.
- A completion date, and a call before they touch anything you did not approve.
- A written warranty on labour and parts.
- The old parts, so you can see they were replaced.
For an expensive job, compare two quotes from shops with the same specialty.
When you collect the car
- Invoice (factura): the consumer protection office SEDECO reminds businesses that every sale of goods and services requires an invoice (ABC Color (opens in a new tab)). You will need it for the warranty.
- A short test drive with the mechanic to confirm the problem is gone.
- Mileage and next service date written on the invoice or a sticker.
- Payment: 7 in 10 electronic payments in Paraguay are now by QR code (ABC Color, 2026 (opens in a new tab)); ask beforehand whether the shop takes it or is cash only.
If the repair goes wrong
Go back to the shop first with the invoice and written warranty. If they do not respond, you can file a complaint with SEDECO through the complaint form on its website; SEDECO says about 8 in 10 complaints end in a satisfactory agreement for the consumer (La Nación, 2024 (opens in a new tab)).
FAQ
How do I find a good auto repair shop in Ñemby?
Look for one with the specialty you need, on your side of the PY01 or on your route, even if it is in San Lorenzo or San Antonio. Get the diagnosis, quote and warranty in writing.
Can a mechanic charge me for work I did not approve?
Law 1334/98 (art. 16) says any job or cost not in the quote must be communicated to you before it is done. That is why a written quote matters.
Does the shop have to give me an invoice?
Yes. SEDECO says every sale of goods and services requires an invoice, and you will need it to claim on the warranty.
Where can I complain if the shop does not honour the repair?
First at the shop, with the invoice and warranty. If that fails, with SEDECO through the complaint form on its website.
