To find a good hardware store (ferretería) in Ñemby, start with one on your side of Route PY01, send your list with sizes and brands on WhatsApp, and ask for a written quote with delivery included. For a big order, compare two quotes before buying.
Which side of PY01 should you shop on?
Ñemby is split in two by Route PY01 (opens in a new tab), the former Acceso Sur linking Asunción with Encarnación. Crossing it at rush hour for a pipe fitting or a bag of cement can take longer than the errand itself.
- Shop on your side: if you live in barrios such as Villa Anita, Mbokajaty, Salinas or Pa'i Ñu, look first at what you can reach without crossing the highway, and vice versa.
- Watch the roadworks: the public works ministry (MOPC) has announced an upgrade of PY01 with seven grade-separated junctions, one of them in Ñemby (opens in a new tab), with works between Cuatro Mojones and Pratt Gill scheduled from August 2026. If your delivery has to cross the highway, ask which way the truck will go and how long it may take.
- Check neighbouring towns: Ñemby borders San Lorenzo, Capiatá, San Antonio and Villa Elisa (opens in a new tab). Near the boundary, the handiest store may be on the other side.
What to send before you go
A neighbourhood ferretería will not always have everything in stock. Message first and send:
- The full list with sizes: pipe type and diameter, cable gauge, rebar length, number of bags.
- Photos of the part you are replacing, with a tape measure beside it. Elbows and taps look alike across brands.
- The brand or quality you want, especially for paint and electrical items.
- Whether you need cutting or delivery: cut pipe, sheet metal or timber, and drop-off at the site.
That tells you upfront whether they have it all or whether to split the order between two stores.
How to compare quotes without surprises
Paraguay's consumer protection law, Ley 1334 (opens in a new tab), has useful rules for quotes:
- Prices including taxes, stated precisely (art. 10).
- Quote validity period (art. 15): ask until what date the price holds, since material prices move.
- Extra costs notified in advance (art. 16): if delivery or cutting that was not quoted comes up, they must tell you before doing it.
Compare quotes on the total: materials plus delivery and cutting. A lower unit price can end up dearer if delivery is charged separately.
Buying electrical supplies safely
Electrical parts are not the place to go cheapest. Paraguay's standards institute INTN has warned that cheap plugs and sockets made of plastic or ferrous metal heat up, melt, spark and can start fires (opens in a new tab), and that they should be copper. The standard it promotes is PNA IEC 60906-1, for plugs up to 16 A and 250 V with two pins plus earth; in 2022 it was still voluntary.
At the counter, ask to see the copper contacts and ask about the standard. If you are redoing the wiring, check with your electrician which model to buy before you go.
Paying and what to ask for at pickup
QR is now standard in Paraguay: in April 2026 it accounted for 68.1% of electronic payments (opens in a new tab), according to Bancard. Still ask whether cards carry a surcharge or cash earns a discount on big orders.
- Always ask for an invoice (factura). The consumer agency Sedeco notes that every sale of goods and services must be invoiced (opens in a new tab). You need it for returns and complaints.
- Written warranty: for power tools or pumps, the warranty must be given in writing (opens in a new tab), stating its length, what it covers and where repairs are done.
- Check the order before signing the delivery note: bag count, sizes and no damaged parts.
