The easiest way to find a good café in Ñemby is to pick by neighborhood and by plan: a quick coffee near home, a relaxed afternoon snack in the town center, or something sweet to take away. The city is split by Ruta PY01 (the former Acceso Sur), so crossing it at rush hour just for a coffee is rarely worth it.

Where should you look, depending on your neighborhood?

Ñemby has eleven barrios according to Wikipedia (opens in a new tab): Centro, Villa Anita, Mbokajaty, Salinas, Vista Alegre, 3 de Mayo, Pa'i Ñu, Rincón, Los Naranjos, Caaguazú and Cañadita. Cafés and bakeries are spread across them rather than packed onto one street.

  • Centro: around Plaza Fulgencio Yegros, the San Lorenzo parish church and the municipal market. The handiest area if you are already running errands.
  • Barrios along the PY01: good for a stop on the way to Asunción or heading south, but check which side of the highway the place is on before you go.
  • Residential barrios: Villa Anita, Vista Alegre and Caaguazú tend to have neighborhood confiterías and ice-cream shops for an afternoon snack close to home.

Watch the PY01 in the coming months: the Public Works Ministry announced overpass works in the Ñemby area, starting from August 2026, according to Hoy (opens in a new tab). If the café is on the other side of the road, check traffic first.

What kind of café are you after?

Café culture is new in Paraguay: 15 to 20 years ago it barely existed, and interest in specialty coffee and baristas is now growing, according to La Nación (opens in a new tab). In Ñemby you will find both styles:

  • Neighborhood confitería: café con leche, cocido (Paraguay's toasted yerba drink), cake, chipa, empanadas and pastries. Ideal for a family merienda or takeaway.
  • Specialty café: espresso, filter coffee and single-origin beans. If that matters to you, ask where the beans come from and whether they grind to order.
  • Ice-cream shop with coffee: handy in summer, when a hot coffee in the midday heat makes little sense.

Do you want to stay and work or study?

Not every place is set up for two hours with a laptop. Message them first and ask:

  • Whether there is wifi and how reliable it is.
  • Whether there are outlets near the tables.
  • Whether there is air conditioning, which matters from November to March.
  • When it gets busy: the afternoon merienda is usually the peak.

If you are staying a while, order something every so often. In small places it is noticed and appreciated, and it makes the staff far happier to see you come back next week with the laptop.

How can you pair coffee with a walk?

Cerro Ñemby is the city's main park, with sports courts, a walking path and an emerald-colored lagoon. An early-morning or late-afternoon walk followed by coffee or a snack in Centro is a simple Saturday plan that works well. During Holy Week, the Stations of the Cross on the hill, with traditional estacionero singers, draws big crowds: give yourself extra time and expect busy cafés.

What should you check before heading out?

  • Today's hours: neighborhood places change hours between weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays, and some only open in the afternoon.
  • Table or takeaway: if you are going as a group or with kids, ask whether there is room.
  • Payment: cash, card, QR or bank transfer. Do not assume everything is accepted.
  • Orders: for birthday cakes or party platters, ask how many days ahead you need to order.

A quick WhatsApp message before you leave saves a wasted trip, especially if you have to cross the highway. Many neighborhood places list a WhatsApp number, and a message is easier than a call.
